It looks good but you should work on the performance of the game because sometimes i get ~75FPS and sometimes i get a poor ~25FPS

Thats really odd, maybe its just the way it works with your hardware. on my crappy pc it runs 120fps and on a mildly beeefy pc it ran 400-500fps before i locked the framerate. Well thanks for the input, after all this hasnt been tested on many systems.

Make sure that your java is fully updated.
I don't use any libraries so there isn't any real reason why it shouldn't be working.

not necissarily. not using libraries tends to drop performance, but in this case, everything is so simple that performance isn't drastically dented due to the lack of libraries.
on my 1.5GB ram, amd e-350 processor acer aspire, running at more than 100fps is insane, nothing else runs that fast on my pc. i have to test this on more systems but the performance is generally good as i said before, in one case 400-500fps(before i locked the framerate to a max of 120)

I will look more into performance optimization in the future but this is still a prototype demo lol.

may i ask for the specs on your pc death_angel? it would really help me get insight on why it is not performing well.

The hell?!?!
somethings seriously wrong here... i'll figure it out (:
theres no way there should be performance issues on a pc like that.

in the mean time though, would you mind redownloading it? i did change the download link shortly after posting this and it's possible you have the version from before the "patch" i made a few weeks ago.
if that doesn't change anything and you havent already tried this, change the VM args in the .bat file to around 1 gig of ram and use that to launch the jar

thanks for the input, as always Cheesy

wtf... i made that exe myself and its never given me problems in the past, maybe it's reading as a virus because i'm not a "known publisher"
nevertheless, i'll find a different method for .exe's in the future

That makes more sense Tongue

I was considering putting it on greenlight but I don't have anywhere near enough people knowing about this game AND liking it for it to be accepted.

Thoughts for the future I guess.
I'll be adding another updated link that has the biomes and music added sometime this week.

I think putting it on greenlight costs like 90 euros or something
I think they did that to reduce the amount of shit projects

Yeah here in Canada its 100$ flat. O wouldn't mind saving up and paying that. But I still have to add things like collecting btoken blocks and enemies so that its fully playable. Gotta change this from a "shit project" to a decent one first Tongue

Be sure to download the new update, I'm playing around with parralax scrolling now and its pretty cool

I'm getting around 600fps, but the player is moving around too fast for the game to be playable.  Either he's had a gallon of red bull or you need to have a look at your game loop  Smiley.  The lighting could use some improvement too, it looks like you're using a mask at night and it's making the torches useless.

Which download did you use?
I already locked the frame rate in the latest version.

Unless it freezes at first and then goes super fast... Its a frameskip bug that quickly shows all of the skipped frames before continuing, idk why it happens

Uh, not sure which version Undecided  I downloaded it Saturday and the jar is 9289kb, if that helps.  I played it for about 5min and the player's movement was fast the whole time.  I'll try he new one shortly.

I'm gonna have to test out all of the jars myself, I may have uploaded the wrong file early on before I capped the ticking framerate

I can tell the music is most likely FL studio and not that but more of a bunch of instruments playing the same tune. It sounds like part of a piece of music, not one itself.

Just what I noticed.

FL Studio is a professional music development program... Plenty of music producers use it to make very high quality music. It's foolish to judge the quality of the music by the program it was created in.

Absolutely do not do this. Your game is not ready for Greenlight, you'll just be throwing your money away. Even my game was a bit of a gamble going in, and it was a lot further along and much more polished that yours currently is.

You should keep working on your project, but most certainly DO NOT put it up on Greenlight yet. The first week of exposure is critical, and is one of the major determining factors of getting greenlit. I got 60% of my total votes for Retro-Pixel Castles in that first week, the rest came from serious marketing between my Kickstarter, sending about 20+ emails a day to news sites, and of course the awesome people here on JGO.

Don't go to Greenlight until your project's quality rivals Terraria or Starbound. If you can't reach that level, then just forget Greenlight all together. As cliche as it sounds; Playing in the big leagues is a whole different ball game, you have to compete with the big boys. So, unless you really think you're just as good or better than the proven titles in similar genres, you won't get anywhere. Smiley

I know that sounds harsh and I don't mean to be. I'm just trying to give you the blunt truth now before you toss out 100 CAD. You have to completely change your entire perspective when you start considering Greenlight. You must compare yourself with the leaders of the genre, the real, proven games by actual professionals. No one, and I mean absolutely no one will care if you're just a hobbyist who wants people to play his "kool game". They just want something that's a blast to play, and something as good or better than the games they already can get.

Just my 2 cents. Keep at it, consider Greenlight later. Smiley

lol i guess i wasn't clear enough on my ambitions. Greenlight is planned for 1+ years from now at least. but thanks for the pointers anyway Smiley

on the grand scale, all that this is right now is a shitty project by some random kid in all honesty ahaha.

it's always great to hear advice from someone on a more personal level.

Just for the heck of it, i'll give my my full scoop.

i know people have to pay for greenlight for a reason. and steam games mean business, nothing as undevelopped as this can make it super far. before it can get posted, performance needs to be perfect, gameplay needs to be awesome, gui needs to be pleasing to the eye, storyline has to make sense etc. and on top of that, people need to LIKE the game.

Congratulations on your retro-pixel castles game. I was wondering who made it and are planning to check it out, i'm happy you made it in. Being in direct contract with you is pretty awesome.
