I blackened out java4k.com. Sad day indeed. I feel like if SOPA/PIPA becomes reality I fear a lot of the 4k games become illegal copyright infringement. This very much affects us as game devs, because a lot of the games are inspired by others.

Indeed - we can just hope enough people will join the strike and it will have a big enough effect to both stop SOPA & PIPA.

In France, some major websites protest too. I put this into the background of my blog. Foreign countries are concerned too as SOPA would allow American corporations to block foreign websites too. Some of them are already illegal, aren't they?

It's amazing how many people that this reaches all over the Internet that aren't American. Feels like America is the whole world at times... And yeah, the law bothers me a lot too because I realize that other countries could be next if this passes, but I can't do anything about SOPA or PIPA. Yoroshiku ne (I'm counting on you guys).

Australia, Finland and The Netherlands (since 2 days...) already have domain blacklists for ISPs.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is based in USA. What a shame for me, SOPA writers have been inspired by the French laws around HADOPI Australia, Finland and The Netherlands (since 2 days...) already have domain blacklists for ISPs.
What a bad piece of news

I think everyone here understands the importance of the internet. It's been relatively free since its inception, and governments not too concerned about it. But in the past decade it has grown in importance, to a point for majority of the people out there the internet is a large part of their daily lives.
So, it's mainstream now, it's what people use daily, ordinary people, not just nerds in their parents basement.
Government tries to control everything, because there always exist individuals in government that think they should dictate and control everything around you.
I'm a big Ron Paul supporter, and I think government should be as miniscule as possible, out of the daily lives of people.
The internet has not grown to the revolutionary thing it is today because of government involvement, it's done so because the government was absent. But with increased bureaucracy, laws, regulations, etc. the internet will become stunted, and I fear for its future.
America technically "owns" the internet, this is why this law is so important. They can shut down a domain of a foreign site servicing people in another country, just because some fascists laws in America.
But what I fear exactly is a "internet split", partitioning of the internet into regions. Look at China and their great firewall, look at Iran with their "Shalal network" (or whatever), Australia even. Perhaps the EU will create a european based internet free of American influence, but under control of brussel beurocrats (no better).
The regulations and laws in different regions are already setting up the scenario for this to happen, a collision course.
If you wanted to visit a site in a different region you'd have to do some special things, not sure how that would end up, but the internet as we know it will cease to exist.
The internet has been a independent world of its own, but it looks like national governments are trying to crack down on that, imposing their rule over it.

Don't think this issue is really going to go away now that DNS blocking has become common. A better way to protect the internet is to fix the above vulnerability and move to some sort of decentralised DNS system.

Slightly OT: The Stop SOPA banner is growing, and the cancer ribbon is blocking the Home and Help buttons... >_> I also realized why everyone is so slow. It's 21:00 here, but it's morning/mid day in America now, right?

It's a ribbon for all kinds of 'bad circumstances', I'd point you to the wikipedia page, but, you know.

As long as you check a secondary source as well (as simple as googleing the info you find), Wikipedia can be an amazing and valuable resource. -Nathan p.s. - Googleing? Googling? Googeling?

And what if something like "conservapedia" is your main source of information? Let's go beat up some people (I'm meta today).

add ?banner=none to wikipedia urls. How many have actually read the bills? And how many are getting there information from some third party?
I have. It's a pile of horse-shit. Not that that is rare with new bills. It's especially obvious with stuff like the internet when nobody seems to have a clue how things even work on the internet.

I have. It's a pile of horse-shit. Not that that is rare with new bills. It's especially obvious with stuff like the internet when nobody seems to have a clue how things even work on the internet. Majority of U.S. congressmen and congresswomen are old, and many just recently started using the internet. George Bush didn't even use the internet as president, and he was president until 2009. Their mental-model of how the internet works was made famous by the quote "It's a series of tubes!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8XSo0etBC4For them the internet is either Wikileaks, Google or where congressmen go naked on cam. These people don't care about the internet. For them it's of as much importance as microwave popcorn, or LED lightbulbs. They have no vision of how the internet is changing and will change society. The internet is communication, information sharing, an information highway, if you start building walls in the middle of that road the traffic won't go as it used to. The people in congress don't have a clue what they vote on most of the time, never read any of the bills. Technocrats, assistants and lobbyists write all this stuff, all with their own agenda, then the congressmen are told "this is what you should vote for because it gives you this", and thousands of pages of legal nonsense text are approved into law because it either sounds patriotic or gives that politician some prestige. Congress should be dissolved, all laws negated, and start from scratch.

As vile, nasty, and corrupt as Stevens was, and as funny and crotchety as that remark sounded ... am I the only one that talks about a network link as a "pipe"? I mean sure, it may add capacity easier than a sewer or water system, but it is more like tubes than a big truck... http://youtu.be/EtOoQFa5ug8Grumble grumble how do I embed youtube videos in this chatty-gizmotron pinup-board thing again?

Okay, this is just fudging annoying.
English Wiki: Gone. Practically all my anime sites: Gone. The Daily WTF: Blacked out in FAVOR of SOPA. -_- (EDIT: Seems to be a joke?) Information on almost all other pages.
At least make the fudging "blackout" optional, at least for non-Americans! Stop forcing the SOPA meme already!

Yeah Jesse Ventura also said this, that is also impossible to read it all, because its just so much; they bombard the guys with bills - and most of it just gets through. Congress should be dissolved, all laws negated, and start from scratch.
+9000. Absolutely. Many people have pointed out anyway, that most of the laws are just there so that there is more work for lawyers and politicians and whatnot. Bureaucracy to the max D= So I guess almost all laws today are about more bullshit bureaucracy, more surveillance, more governmental control, less freedom or a combination. Of course written in ambiguous/vague english, so that on the one hand the bill can pass, and later they can abuse its power. Like with SOPA.

The scariest thought is...

I don't know which one is scarier.

Yeah. Most likely a bunch of stupid opportunistic ignorants and a handful of clever puppet masters.
