In my never ending quest to increase the quality of posts on JGO, a few additional measures where put in place:

  • Topic subject now need to have a bare minimum of information, hopefully reducing the number of topics named 'i need help', 'please fix this bug' and 'i have a question for you'
  • The number of consecutive replies in a topic by one member is now capped, to reduce the number of topics where people are mainly talking to themselves, apparently lacking any insentive for members to reply, or for anybody to discuss the content of the topic in general.

Good stuff, but the latter point should not apply for the showcase and similar sections.

If absolutely nobody is responding to your updates, you're doing something wrong.

As always, you're still free to update the first or last post.

How many posts is the reply to self capped to? I didn't really see a problem where people kept replying to the same thread to a amount that it was annoying. I think I only saw it happen once or twice in the last year, which is not enough to put in a restriction in my opinion.

I simply looked at the topics that were [ignored] by people (recently added functionality), and noticed they all had in common that they were topics where the topic starter was rambling on, and on, and on.

And as every marketing guru knows: for every person that uses the [ignore] button, a few million are annoyed.

Hi

I agree with cylab, the second point shouldn't apply to the WIP section. Some people can be interested in a topic but not registered here because they don't want to post any comment, they just want to "follow" it and sometimes, a creator can have a small information to publish, something that is not important enough to write a big article in a blog or in a dedicated website. When you make a game, you don't have always some very graphical things to show. Moreover, people can appreciate a topic, click on "appreciate" once to say "I like it" but post no comment. The second suggestion should be enabled only when it becomes really annoying, for example when someone keeps talking to herself/himself by posting several comments a day instead of editing her/his latest comment. Maybe a better solution would consist in preventing multiple consecutive posts by the same member in a thread within less than 24 hours. A member would have to wait for 24 hours to post another comment in the same thread if the latest reply was hers/his or she/he could edit her/his latest comment.

If people are genuinly interested in following a project and somehow absolutely nobody at all responds to the topics and a lot of people are setting such topics to 'ignored', then these authors much better off to start a blog/journal on their own site, where they don't continuously shove their updates in the face of people that apparently don't care.

TL;DR: this is a forum, it's meant to be a place of interaction, not monologue.

I like that idea, maybe even bring it up to 48 hours or something, but at least it wouldn't stop people from posting updates to their games that no one might reply to. When I make a post I know that people read it and sometimes even get personal messages about people liking it, but if it happens twice or so that no one reacts to it in the forum with a "Nice!" post it would suck to never again be able to post an update.

Good idea riven, the amount of spam topics that are easily solved is too damn high. Go to stackoverflow or something Roll Eyes
About the 'monologue' thing, I kind of agree, but sometimes it's nice to be notified of what progress a dev has made on his game, especially if it's a big update. Maybe limit it to once a month or something?

If nobody replies after 5 (!) real, informative updates, it's telling.

I think its a very nice idea/feature, a monologue limit of 5 consecutive posts is more than generous IMO and if no one so much as acknowledges/comments your posts with a reply after that many maybe the thread deserves to die? or at least should be better suited for a blog/journel (as mentioned above) rather than a forum post.

I do have to say these dead monologue threads are kinda sad and blogs would be much better for that.
I dont want to point fingers, but some seem to just want to have a platform of potential readers, but nobody actually cares.
I would however argue that maybe gouessej should probably have special permission to break this rule... I don't know, the thread has been here for so long, and it always reminds me of some of my old projects that live for years and aren't finished. :D

Apparently you don't value it to the extend that you bother to reply to these kinds of threads. If you, struck with this realization, take action right now, you won't be breaking any rules and the authors will probably shower you with medals. All you have to ask is whether you did it for the greater good, or for the smaller good - but... what does that even mean??

  • The support for UBB codes in signatures is now restricted, to prevent 'banner style' signatures, keeping the topic layout reasonably clean.

In ancient history I'd PM people to remove their banners, but these days I'm too busy raking in piles of cash for cas.

Thank you but I don't want a special rule. On one hand, I understand that Riven wants to reduce the amount of spam here. On the other hand, I still think the second point goes a bit too far (and I'm not the only person having some doubts about the pertinence of this feature). I will probably put my very short updates into my main RSS feed, the longer ones into my blog and I will post a lot less in the dedicated thread of my main project. You use a smiley, your comment is not intended to be harsh but anyway I will go on working on my game and nobody will succeed in discouraging me.

I think I found a bug in this system...  First I was trying to add a new post to my game topic about rewriting it and then I couldn't because I posted too much before the change, and now I tried to edit my last post and it thinks I'm adding a new post.

Still, that feature was very depressing.  Not getting allowed to post is quite depressing.  D:

That's a good point, if nobody seems to care about the updates to a game it makes more sense just to keep the updates quiet.  There's no reason to stop developing the game in that case; development can continue without posting updates about what you do.  That's a good view on it; I don't really need to share what I do if people aren't interested.  If they are, they could just go to my GitHub page or the GitHub repository for the game to see all that I've done.

People constantly make 'blog-like' posts so their game can be pushed up in the WIPs. Perhaps in the first post of their thread they can have some sort of 'dev-blog' and they can post their updates there. And once they post that update, their game is at the top of the WIP section again. That way it will work just like it does now, except there will be less 'blog-like' posts and everyones games are still being pushed. Then for really important updates that do need attention you can simply make another post for those.

This probably isn't the best idea in the world, but I would like to see it in action.
