  How long were you programming with Java before you made your first game?  (Read 1490 times)

I started learning Java two weeks ago and I feel like the learning curve is very slow. Granted, two weeks is not very long. I've finished thenewboston's beginner course, as well as multiple other video tutorials and I've even read Beginner Java for Dummies. I'd like to be able to program a simple game, without just copying code and following along with a Game Programming video tutorial (Which I tried, and ended up not knowing how to implement my own ideas). My only other programming knowledge is HTML and some GML from 5 or 6 years ago, when I was into Game Maker.

My question is, how long were you programming with Java before you made a game? I'm not talking about making a full fledged, 3D game-- But a simple side scroller or dungeon crawler or whatever. What's a good next step to bridge what I've learned in these beginner courses with actual game programming?

Java isn't a game programming language - it's a programming language.

There are libraries, collections of code, that give you tools to implement game mechanics without re-inventing the wheel. For example, LWJGL and LibGDX. They have tools that make things like playing music, sound, and drawing graphics more powerful/efficient, and tools for getting input from the user (touch screens, tilting, keyboard, mouse) all with game development in mind - something that the standard java libraries doesn't have.

So to make a "game" you need to figure out how to draw something on the screen, probably how to play sound/music and how to grab input from the user. And lastly, how to get all of those working together to make a consistent experience.

mainly this depend from you and not from the programming language

i mean is more easy learn a new language for people that already know at good level a language
more complex if you are learning for the first time a programming language

anyway
basically in java in the beginning (and only in the beginning) is more easy that C for example for the memory management (in java memory is managed automatically)
but basically in C in the beginning  (and only in the beginning) is more easy that java write the code interaction (in C there aren't object but only procedure)
both this language have their complexity in different areas

This are just 2 stupid examples, it is not a comparation between the java and C
and they are true until you write application like, calculator or hello word or something like this

but when you start to use really a language doesn't exist easy programming language

Negative three years. I wasn't interested in game programming during the time I learned Java.

The language could take a month to learn if you are extremely ambitious and intentionally seek out the answers to questions like "Why does this feature exist and why is it useful?" Otherwise it could take 3 to 24 months. At some point you need to learn what works well and what doesn't and that only comes from experience.

Side scrolling and top down games from a beginner will always be terrible because you trick yourself into thinking that when you make the character go up when the up key is pressed you are making progress. You sink time into art and visual feedback and think this is a first game but you've made neither a game nor a toy nor a prototype of either. Make Pong or Snake or Breakout or stripped down rogue level. Then you can say you made a game. If you recombine art and tiles and code made by someone else and think it is a game because you wrote your own "story" then at best you are a writer.

And HTML is in no sense a programming language. If it were C, VB, C#, or C++ then you would have something to build on. HTML is to programming as knitting is to gardening. (Gardening and knitting both involve making things using pointy metal things. It may seem like a bad analogy with random subjects, but they are that different.)

About 6-7 months if I call correctly. As jon said java isn't a game programming language like GML, it's a full fledged programming language. Now I can assure you, game programming is very fun however you need to know the language extremely well to produce a good game as well as learn the library you will use. After I mastered the basic console stuff I went on to learn how to make and use GUI's in Swing. And then I learned networking. And then I learned about the compiler and byte code. And then I learned a bit of C++ Tongue. I'm not saying you need to learn about the compiler and C++, but you do need to know the language. I suggest you learn how to open a window and use Swing. Then learn networking, I believe that thenewboston's chat tutorial is great for this as long as you look up the methods and classes he is using because he doesn't explain them too great. Good luck to you, and hopefully we'll see you on this forum as a java master!

I learned Java in.... Never. I learned the basics of programming when I was little, around 9 or so, so Java wasn't that hard to catch on to. Though I did keep learning things as time went on. That's how every language works. I would make games with whatever knowledge I had, rather than to make myself learn the language completely first.

Ive been a professional java programmer for 15+ years.. .. but i only decided to try make a game using it in the last year.. Smiley

If your just learning I would give you the following tips:

- Dont be afraid to try and see what happends
- Dont be afraid to ask questions.. but make sure you try to solve problems your self first.
- Google is very handy
- Start off with very basic goals.. Too many developers thing their first game will be the next MMO block buster.. thats just not reasonable.

Well, if you know the basics, a little bit of swing and a bit of java2d, then you can do some simple games.

I made some kind of ping pong game when I had like 2 or 3 week of study, it was a simple ball bouncing off a moving platform and colliding with the frame bounds.

In that time I had a few beginner problems but now I can do that in like 10 minutes  Grin. All you have to do is practice a lot over and over again untill gain enough experience to make a decent game.

I started with HTML  and CSS when i was 11 then C++ and Python when i was 12 and java When i was 13 i finished my first game a few months later.

Forget. But it's not long because there is no way that I would be sitting in sunny day and thought "let's build an enterprise desktop application!". Actually it's game that introduce me to programming deeper.

I started learning Java about 3 years back. Until then, I was used to C taught in school. I learnt Java with one book - Learn Java in 24 hours by Rogers Cadenhead. And for practice, I completed all the exercises present in CodingBat.Com which helped me more to understand code. Then I made some small apps to learn swing like picture viewer and a simple bouncing ball app which can run as an Applet as well.

Then thinking of making games, I searched google "How to create computer games". Since most of the links showed 'Game Maker' and 'Construct 2', I learnt both of them but I got annoyed with the logo of them on my games. So I bought a copy of 'Developing Games In Java' by David Brackeen. Instead of writing code that looked alike, I read the theory and made my own GameEngine called Game Engine For Java (GEJ) which resembles the game maker's event system.

Next I translated the same game into C# to learn the language. And then made a Game Maker like 'Room Editor' for my games.



Now, my goals are to write a compiler for my own GameMaker like tool GameForge and to learn 3D graphics with LWJGL.

3 months modding Minecraft before I gave up and started trying to make my own games. (that counts as learning Java without making my own game right?)

Then another 6 months before I learned OpenGL and actually made something playable.

I learned java just to get into gaming. I was into GML as well and switched to java, because it allowed me better optimizations when writing my own Minecraft 2D / Terraria clone (these games need to display lots of blocks and that's not easily possible with GML).

So actually I didn't learn java at all when I began to write a game in java. I wrote games in java the first second I was able to program in java...

What me helped a lot was reading code from Notch's Ludum dare games. Reading other's code in general helps understanding how to structure your classes. It's where I learned about how I could put all my different 'Screen's into different classes. The MainScreen, the GameScreen, the GameOverScreen, etc.

Also, when you finally got the hang of it, try to participate at Ludum dare at least once. It's really cool and helps you finishing at least ONE project.

I've now been programming java for 3 years. Always writing games or similar. And only in the 48 hours that Ludum dare gave me, I wrote the ONLY project that I actually finished.

I first learnt programming several years ago, forgot how long but I think around 11-12. I only learnt some of the basics, before giving up programming until a year ago. I picked up Java in a while, and spent a day or so making a space invaders clone using Swing and AWT. I wouldn't really consider that a game because it was meant as an exercise to get back into programming. Now i'm working on my first proper game.

So depending on how you look at the situation, my answer to your question would be either 1 year or 6 years.

I didn't make my first game yet.

I started learning java at the start of this year, and I found Java interestanting and cooler than BYOND's programming language.

I study java ebooks just 1 hour per day(I'm sorry, they are not-paid ebooks, I know there's no excuse for this, but, there're no ways to buy java books here in Brazil, and my parents wouldn't help me pay them, in the future I will someway contribute with who helped me) and I'm afraid of moving to game programming without learning almost all basic things.

I also find the learning curve is a little slow.

After 2 Months reading a book I did some tutorials on YouTube, I made a tower defence with help of ulixava, and after that my very first game, (after 3 months in total?)

It was a game where you was an airplane and had to shoot tanks on the ground, tanks shot targeted bullets back if they saw you (your airplane). It is the project I learned the most from, like NOT using ints for rotations/positions..

Learned OpenGL after a year when I played around with C++... First had no need to use it as Java is very good/far developed itself.

Four months (but I was not all day studying). Then I read "Beginning Android Games" by Mario Zechner and tried to modify a Snake Game example in the book. Finally, there was a Jam on my city and seriously, altough I was a completely beginner, I could finish a whole game. It was awesome. On that kind of event are where the most I learn.
