I am new to libGDX and would like to get into learning it. I've used slick2d in the past, but want to try libGDX now since slick2d is pretty much a dead API.

Any tips or suggestions?

Yep. The wiki is pretty much the place to go. I would suggest going through the starter game on there to get a feel for how a libGDx application runs, what certain classes do what, etc… Also, having a knowledge of how OpenGL works really helps.

You might also wanna take a look at this dev blog : http://www.aurelienribon.com/blog/. There are some JARs that can be useful, especially the LibGDX Project Setup if you're a beginner.
