This is a 2d platform game. So far there are only 4 levels, but there will be more levels later on. I would like to know what you think of the game so far? Anything that can be improved?

Play game! (runs as an applet)

It's Cyber Amazon remade in ultra high resolution!  Great stuff!

It all worked smoothly for me.  It's good fun, and it looks really nice.

If you're looking for things to improve, my suggestions are:

  • Jumping doesn't feel quite perfect yet.  I don't quite know why, but the transition from small jump to big jump as you hold down the key doesn't feel like it happens in the right place.
  • Jumping over spikes isn't much fun.  It's not obvious that they're dangerous until they kill you, and the collision detection seems to be on the sadistic side.  Better game without them?
  • There could be more variety (in the enemies or the platforming) early on in the game.  At the moment the first couple of levels are just a matter of walking forward and firing occasionally.  I wouldn't necessarily want it to be more difficult (although I did complete the four levels easily enough) and it's kind of cool having a slow build-up before seeing the first aliens.  But having a bit more of a challenge on the first level wouldn't hurt.
  • I'm sure you can think of a better name than Jordbo. Wink

But overall, big thumbs-up!

Simon

Tried it on ubuntu and it works fine.
Love the pixelated retro look and it plays well. It's a bit like Green Beret.

Some ideas / remarks:
* make the levels scroll vertically as well. It felt a bit strange that I wasn't able to climb some of those ladders that go to the edge of the screen further up, and expanding the levels vertically opens up a lot of opportunities to make level design a bit more interesting
* make it possible to kill people too (and perhaps punish the player for it)
* make the player able to duck
* the jumping feels a bit unnatural

But it's a great start!

Thanks for the feedback! I will see if I can make the first level a bit more interesting/harder. Maybe also do some work with the jumping. Ducking is also something I will consider to add.

@dishmoth
Well I don't know about the name yet. I have always difficult to find a good name for my games (jordbo is Swedish and means earthling btw). If you got any ideas for another name you can let me know Smiley

That is a nice game. Consider power-ups such as shields, and improvements to the gun  Smiley
To me "jordbo" is such a bad word for a game, whereas "Earthling" sounds much more interresting. Maybe that's just me though  Cheesy
