All,
I know it was a long time coming, but the boards are finally up and running! A few notes:
- Mail does not work yet. We have to install a new mail server and then everything should be fine. I know this was a complaint on the last forums and it will be a priority. - There is a Karma system now on this board to aid with spam/filtering - Still looking for volunteers for moderating - URL changeover will happen within 2 weeks now that the provider has a domain change
Let me know how everything works!
-Chris

Thanks! This move was NOT a trival excercise as there are many issues with moving from a flat file system to a db system. A ton of issues with the conversion tools that forced me to hand tool the move in a couple of key aread. Anyway, I plan on cleaning up the structure and rebuilding some boards, using a duatgher structure to clean up and allow for better grouping.

Chris, The new forum is great, and I can only guess the difficulties encountered in the transfer (I remember having to convert all my MS Access2 to Access97 databases. The automatic translator did most of it but through a few funnies in.) So consider this more of something for the wish list, after things have settled down: The hyperlinking made it easier to go up a level to check other threads in the same area. The forum 'jump' feature at the bottom of the page does something similar, but you have to select where to jump to first, so it takes a bit longer. /Edit - I just noticed that the Forum Jump is initialised to the current forum, so you just have to press 'GO' to get back. Maybe I should keep quiet... Although the hyperlinking was nicer. Alan

Looks good! Nice job Chris (and whoever else helped) The close/open header button looks a little messed up and has some transparency issues, though. So you can use these buttons I made that uses the same font as the rest of the buttons and has correct transparency http://woogley.net/misc/open_header.gif http://woogley.net/misc/close_header.gifedit: it would be nice to have Flash back in the sigs too!

Um...everyone might want to go to their profile, find "Return to topics after posting by default." and turn it to on, to get rid of the annoying default behaviour that's different from the old forum and most otehrs.

- Still looking for volunteers for moderating
Didn't someone previously suggest some catch-all moderators, to cope with the fact that moderators come and go, so you really want a backup for each forum (e.g. GerghisKhan, who's not been around for ages, but used to be around a lot)? Several of the current moderators have volunteered to moderate every forum that has no dedicated moderator, so if we can't have "catch-all" moderators then at least assign them to existing mods for now, and then hand them over to other people as they come along. The following forums I read every day anyway, so I can particularly easily mod: Java.Net - Games General Discussions Your Games OnLine Game Development Shared Code although like most of the others I'm happy to be a backup mod for all of them, since I read pretty much every forum sooner or later

Now, there is a Chat function in the top toolbar! I need to make a button for this and post directions for use with an IRC client if you choose to. But now we have realtime chat and it's a Java app! Cheers! -Chris BTW, the format is going to change to make the colors match the forum and it implementation is kind of beta-ish. Just so you know, I know

server: irc.chatstop.net port: 6667 channel: #JGOChat
irc://irc.chatstop.net:6667/JGOChat <- can't make a link for that (the board adds "http://" at the begining)

Hi Chris, Nice going! Data conversion is never easy, "thread by thread" huh? Sounds really fun! There appears to be two Xith3D forums, I think http://192.18.37.44/forums/index.php?board=24.0 is an incomplete dupe. Can you remove that one please (careful though ) Thanks for carrying over my moderator status in the Xith3D and Physics forums. I don't mind helping out with the moderating in any other forum if you need. Thanks for all your hard work! Cheers, Will.

Woogley's replacement button certainly looks the business. I haven't looked at the chat button yet. Unfortunately when making these improvements, you've lost the hyperlinks on the headings again I'll go play with the chat button now. Alan

Regarding the IRC chat. We have had at least 3 diffetent threads, all encouraging people to start chatting. This was on at least 2 different networks (Freenode (development network) and EnterTheGame(gaming related)). So far none of it has been a success. I have idled in both channels on both networks more or less since day one. So far (and not trying to advertise or anything) the only channel with success is the #lwjgl channel on freenode (quite a few JGO'ers in there). I propose adding an applet client ( http://www.pjirc.com/main.php) and pointing to either a freenode channel (since I think that the site is more development related than anything) OR add an irc server to the java.net (irc.java.net)setup. The latter would probably make more sense, and would allow all sorts of channels for java.net projects. However, there are issues about managing this (though it should be pretty simple).
