Java rocks! But then again anime rocks too!

« Reply #120 - Posted 2003-08-02 19:23:09 »

Yah know, there are lots of people out there that are counter-strike/half-life players. It would be kind of nice if you could add a "Look around with mouse" setting. Then we could actually look at the ground and sky below and above us to fully appreciate the graphics.
There are times when I am climbing up a hill and I can't see what's before me. Crazy graphics and tree physics though.   Cheesy
There is a texture bug though. The texture under trees sometimes turn white and then turn green again.

Wow, that was a quick reply! Also can you strafe? Or will there be no need for strafing?

Talking with some of the 'folks' and here is some feedback:

* There are times when in fullscreen the first time Wurm runs the screen is 3/4ths black and nthe rest white

* Mouse drag/look is a bit cumbersome. I have a suggestion in this regard. Use the right mouse button to switch between two modes - 1) All mouse movements are mouse/look with no holding down of a button, 2) All mouse movements allow interaction with the GUI

* Butterflies fly underground

* Light mapping seems to have some spotty areas where some vertices appear to be lit (near water) yet there is complete darkness out

* Oh and mouse look is inverted on axis... dragging left should change view direction to the left, not the right.

Just wanted to let you know that wurm is looking great. The details about mouse movement ect.. are minor and essential easy fixes..  keep up the good work.

« Reply #130 - Posted 2003-08-05 14:33:58 »

Just checked out the latest Wurm...

Some observations:

- Clipping is working strangely - I can see grass and flowers suddenly snap into view in front of other grass and flowers that are already drawn.
sometimes when looking up you can see trees disappear.

- The grass effect is too 'patchy'  I think shorter, less dense grass might look better.

- At night the butterflies should be replaced with fireflies Smiley.  You don't see real butterflies at night.

Overall though I think it is progressing really well.

Moths!! That's a great idea. I could have them generated near lightsources, and set that lightsource as the center of their "orbit". =D

Already planned "particle-animals" are flocks of birds high up in the sky (birds closer to ground will probably be mobs) and small fish.

I wanted to show Wurm to my girlfriend - I have show it to her few weeks ago and today what I logged in, I was really shocked by a progress. Last time she was complaining about trees quality, but now she said 'Wow', followed by: "But these flowers grow next to each other". What the... I thought.

First - congrats on look, it is good enough that my girlfriend was looking at it as a world, not as a game Smiley Second - she is after a biology studies, so she explained me few things, without caring about the beauty of the rendering...

Yellow flowers which are visible in game grow in gardens (not in forest/meadows) and they grow in tight groups. She proposed you to use Leucanthemum vulgare or Taraxacum officinale - they do grow in terrain like yours (but still they should be packed in groups).

http://plants.usda.gov/cgi_bin/plant_profile.cgi?symbol=TAOF

As for the standalone single plants, Verbascum thapsus is probably a good choice
http://plants.usda.gov/cgi_bin/plant_profile.cgi?symbol=VETH

P.S.
As far as I'm concerned, your flowers and butterflys are great, my girlfriend made me to write this post...
P.P.S.
I think that plants.usda.gov is really a great reference - I have just found it and it can be probably used as a source of many textures...

Haha, that's great. I was totally NOT expecting feedback like that. =)

And as you said, that's probably good news for the quality of the renderer.

I'll swap the texture and bunch them up a bit, just to get her off your back. Wink

« Reply #138 - Posted 2003-08-06 02:24:18 »

Well if you are going to have dandelions then you need to have the fluffy dandelion seeds blowing through the air. Wink

I still think the occasional fire-fly would be nice Smiley

And gophers.. add some little critters.. squirrels would do... then simulate the entire ecosystem.. storm clouds and rain, rivers, lightning.  Then apples falling from trees... or anvils, for comic relief.

Then the hair and clothes of the players should blow in the wind... and their fingernails should grow... and...
I'll shut up now..  It's late, I need sleep. Tongue

.. but I forgot caterpillars.. those butterflies have to be coming form somewhere Smiley

Hi all!

I'm a member of the Wurm team and I thought its about time i introduce myself, instead of hiding out in my apartment.  So,.. hello everyone and thanks for the effort you guys put in to test Wurm and post comments.

Im currently working on a bones animation for the models and I hope that that will be up soon. Another responsibility of mine is the combat system, and there we are relying on you guys to come with feedback once that's implemented. Game balancing is one of the most important issues for games to succeed today.

As Marcus said he's away on bizzniz in Finland for a couple of days, but we in the rest of the team need all the time we could get to try to keep up with him, so we gona work like mad all weekend.

Keep up the good work everyone and we will see you all in Wurm!

Hi all,

Wurm works on my PC, and I have 1 word for it : Fantastic!

My framerates kinda low (highest was 30+) as my PC specs is

Althon 600Mhz
Creative TNT2 Ultra

Will be looking forward to Wurm Online!

I don't know much about JOGL/LWJGL but I'm thinking whether this game is using h/w or s/w rendering?

Looks like I've got lots to learn about 3D programming in general.

It's hardware rendering.

And you're way below the  target computer specs, so I'm still happy with  30 fps. Wink

The frame rate seems a bit low..

I only get about 30fps on my dual processor 2GHz P4 1GB RAM AGP 4x GeForce 2 GTS (32MB VRAM)
It's a pretty fast system for CPU processing power, but I'm not sure how good a GeForce 2 GTS is anymore.. my boss stole the really nice graphics card that came in this system before I started working here.  Sad

I'll blame the graphics card.

But for this style of game 30fps is easily good enough (butterflies are slow Smiley ).

I'm also getting 30-35fps. (Athlon 2200+ XP, JRE 1.4.1, 512Mb, GF4 Ti4200 64Mb).

Cool, for the 1st time I saw the server being online Smiley
I got lots of messages at random intervals that I learned something while I was just doing nothing, though  Huh but I guess you were just testing something....
You went a bit overboard with the butterflies, I mean, it's practically a butterfly plague there  Smiley

It's really developing FAST I must say, and it's getting better with every update.

BTW, do you update only the changed jars? Web Start seems to download everything everytime something changes, including GAGETimer and such...
