Caligari, award-winning producer of 3D modeling and animation software today announced the release of gameSpace Light (gSL), a special edition of the company's game graphics authoring software. gameSpace Light is designed to introduce independent game developers, students and hobbyists to the power of 3D game content creation using Caligari's trademark first-person-perspective design interface.

Available immediately for free download

"We believe that the amateur and independent game market is rapidly expanding," said Roman Ormandy, founder and president of Caligari. "We continue to focus on making powerful and affordable 3D content creation tools even more accessible to aspiring developers looking to break into this industry. In sharp contrast to competitive "starter" products, gameSpace exports to open, usable formats and is a great solution for quickly creating game concepts or prototypes without a lot of hassle or a steep learning curve."

To help independent developers showcase their talent, Caligari also announced the gameSpace Summer Shootout – a game developer's talent competition featuring more than $10,000 in prizes.

Either it's a hoax, or the marketing morons haven't quite got around to updating their website yet...

The link is in the top right corner of their web page, the big "Game Space Light" button.

It is supposed to be a full featured editor, although you can only do limited size pollys with it (around 600 per model if I recall corectlly). It also has limited export options, but does include .X (which I'm not familiar with).
