What a great way to start the day

$ java
Segmentation fault

There goes my more productive programming hours.  Why did I update last night!  Grrrr

Seems I'm not the only one:
http://www.google.com/search?q=10.3.9%20java%20segmentation%20fault&sourceid=mozilla2&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

My recommendation to java developers would be to wait for Tiger, it's only two weeks anyway, don't upgrade to 10.3.9.

Will.

I fixed it by re-applying:

What a pain!

Tiger costs $129, whereas 10.3.9 is free to all Panther users.

I upgraded to 10.3.9 with no problems.  Though many people were bitten by the seg fault issue.  It sucks for sure, but the solution was available almost instantly on various Apple lists.  It's the non-technical users that will suffer the most.  Apple really needs to be more careful, they've broken Java (for some) with system updates before.

Apple should have an automatic update ready to fix the problem for everyone soon.

I find this very troubling.  How could such a big problem miss Apple's QA?

I plan on releasing professional java software for OS X, I do not want to wake up one morning to find a thousand emails in my inbox!

Not only did that update break java, but some people reported Safari problems and Javascript problems.  IMHO, Apple should have pulled the update the moment they realised the problem and re-released it when it was fixed.

This sort of thing really makes people lose confidance in a company.  There's nothing worse than applying OS updates which break stuff.  Windows is very guilty of this too, but I really expect better of Apple -- they have control over the hardware too.

This is the second time I have updated OS X to find it broken, and wasted hours fixing it.  While some updates have been fantastic (aka faster OpenGL, I think that was 10.3.6) I really hope they start to test their updates more.
</rant>

I have a LOT of praise for OS X, if I sound harsh of Apple, it is only because they have very high standards and I hold them to it.  If I enjoyed fixing OS problems I wouldn't be using OS X to start with Wink [on the computer next to me, I have a linux kernel panic message...]

That's the big issue... obviously they didn't know about it.   In there defense,  I didn't have a single issue, and on their Java dev list I've read that others didn't have issues either. But many did.

Did you have all the previous updates installed?  Nobody seems to know what triggers it.

Same problem here, had all updates before, and thanks to Will, I didn't spent the day searching why java was broken...
