- Download an IDE like Eclipse or NetBeans and learn how to use it (if you haven't already)
- (A) If you know how to program:
 - Spend a few weeks trying things out in Java to learn the syntax/API's (If you don't know Java)
 - Download some examples of other Java games or programs doing graphics, animations, sounds, etc.
    - For 3D games you will need one of the other libraries like Xith, jME, Java3d, JOGL, LWJGL...etc.  Depends on the example.
    - Download some model editing software and image editing
    - Spend a few weeks learning how to use the modeling software (It's art, so you may never be good at it without an aptitude for it)

- (B) If you don't know how to program (It's art, so you may never be good at it without an aptitude for it)
 - Spend anywhere from months to years (depending on your aptitude) learning how to program.
 - Average time for someone to teach themselves to program is about a year before becoming reasonably capable, if they have a good aptitude and the time to study it.
 - Buy books, use the web for info
 - Go back to (A) above

Hi I started teaching myself java about a year a go. It was my first programming language I had tried to learn. At first i found it realy hard to find any tutorials on java programming. I went to libraries and I found a grand total of 1 book on java. So all I have is basic (very basic) knowlege of java programming.

Is there any books specific to games programming?
or any printer friendly tutorials on the net?
