Anybody else having inconsistent performance issues, and strange crashes with this handset?

From pure benchmarks, it *should* be one of the fastest phones on the market - however, with real games - its basically f**ked =|

Is it a firmware issue ? (seems unlikely, as we have a production handset)
Is it a JIT issue? (does the phone even have a JIT?!)

I've not heard of any problems like that, but I've not used a 6630 myself. I believe all the Series 60 MIDP 2.0 VMs are based on Sun's 'Monty' CLDC hotspot VM, so sort-of JIT I suppose. At least that's true of Nokia 6600.

If you want to give more details (including firmware version) I can pass them on to the relevant people in Forum Nokia, and let you know if they're able to help.

I'll have a look on the nokia forums too.

Just for reference though the firmware is :-

V 2.39.15.1
19-11-04
RM-1

More details on the issues :-

The primary issue is the stuttering - several games that run fine on the 6600 stutter like crazy on the 6630.

We've tried fiddling with the timing mechanism, but nothing seems to have any impact on the behaviour.

We've also tried numerous other builds, some very simple MIDP1 games.
Their behaviour is identical, so I can't imagine it is anything API related. (flipping/sound/IO streams/ etc, basically all the common problem makers)

We've also found the JVM to be very unstable, what appear to be random lockups when doing nothing beyond simply blitting clipped images to the screen.

Basically, the behaviour of the phone doesn't appear to match the stonking jbenchmark the phone gets.

The UI is pretty flakey too, it feels like  a prototype - but isnt :|

I had heard in the grapevine that there were quite a few problems with the early production releases (including those released now).  Many had noted weird behaviour with random crashes and general stability issues.  I can't recall any mention of stuttering frame rates though.  :/

I've just got my 6630 from Orange - seems stable and robust to me.

Perhaps earlier problems have been sorted - my firmware readout:

v 3.45.113
04.01.05
RM-1

I have experienced these issues on the 6630 on all available firmwares with a number of games all of which will run on previous series 60 Nokias perfectly.

I am seeing stuttering when the games run but can't determine the cause/ solution.

I know the 6630 uses a different release of Symbian OS than the previous series 60s.

Does anyone have any more information on this problem?

the 6630 here- the draw shudders and it crashs if u run
an app afew times- seems its not exiting the app or the
vm has a memory leak on the phone. cant tell

[side note] c apps on the phone have the same problem
with my tests... guess i will distroy my phone when doing
an fw update Wink
