Is there still a place Turn Based Games?

I'm writing this turn based games but a reaction here has just made me think, is there a still a set of people who are interested in turn based strategy games or has everyone migrated to the RTS scene these days?

I play and enjoy (nay; love!) Age of Wonders 2: Shadow Magic frequently.
One of my favorite games for GBA is Advance Wars.
I'm definitly getting Metal Gear AC!D for the PSP.

Yes, I love turn based games. =D



However, if you're making it multiplayer, make sure to either add simultaneous turns like in AoW, or to add an option for limiting how long people can spend on their turns and add a very accesible and realtime chat.

I love turnbased games. I've got a 5-minute turnbased RPG in the works ("nethack meets Strange Adventures in Infinite Space").

I especially love turnbased strategy games though.

Spiderweb software ( http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/ ) seem to have carved out a happy little niece doing turn based strategy RPGs. Quite a large following it seems.

Unfortunatly their games are *huge* and I don't get nearly enough time to actually play any of them.

Ok, I think I'm convinced by the replies from the lofty members It stays turn based and as true to Space Hulk (1st Edition) as possible.

I really hate turn based games(*)... but, I also really hate RTS with a passion

(* That's not strictly ture as I liked Hero Quest a lot of other board games... I just don't like those wannabe "serious" pseudo realistic pc war games)

Well, there is surely a place for turn based games. I mean... no one plays RT chess (yes, there is such a game and... it's of course as silly as it sounds).

Going RT just for the sake of it is like those 2d games which were turned into 3d games just because it was the trendy thing to do.

So... keep a clear vision of your game and choose the things which feel natural. If it's TB, then TB it is! I mean, yea, it sounds easy, but every so often I need to push the brake, because I got carried away by some small piece of oh so nice tech, which doesn't add anything to the game

I'm making an implementation of the board game "Game of Thrones" (after George R.R. Martin's books), and that is turn based. And, I love other turn based games as well. Since I got a family and kids and all, turn-based games suit me even better, because I can take short breaks from the game now and then without really ruining the experience.

nononono - kev only does that with 4k games.

With big games, he writes 90% of the game, then stops dead because his self-appointed time liimit has run out, and he leaves us with an almost-but-not-quite-there game, slavering at the mouth for the "final version" but there'll never be one.

I love turn based games like Heroes of M&M, Warlords, Empire...
Even downloaded Defender of the Crown again and had a great time playing it.
I plan to make a game like Kingdoms of England crossed with Kaiser.

My favorite tb system of all time is Fallout Tactics. It has three tb modes. Computer controled tb that plays ALMOST like real-time. The game uses a tb system where the computer control turns. Classic tb works like Fallout. Team tb works like Fallout but the player can select any team member in any order to command him something. Each team member as an amount of action points available and each action consumes a certain amount of action points. So we could command all our team members alternatively while  they have action points. In classic tb the players must use all action points available in a team member then go to next and so on.

As long as it makes sense for the game structure there will always be space for turn based games. I think a lot of manufacturers have kind of lost touch with that and think real time is better because it is possible rather than because it is the best way to play a game.

I reckon there's also a lot of room for turn based play-by-email type games in the world.

Thats so true. Especially GBA's Advance Wars. Imagine what that would be in RT?
