I recently installed Novell/Suse Linux 9.2
in order to test some Java games. I'm new to Linux. It's been simple to install it: I got a dual boot PC now. Also Java 1.42 is included by default (the JRE I think).
However, I need Java 1.5 for my tests. I checked with Yast for online updates but no Java 1.5 yet on the Suse sites.
So... what's the simplest way to put Java 1.5 on Novell/Suse Linux for pure users not admins? I've used Yast to uninstall the old Java and downloaded SUN's Java 1.5 for Linux as self-executing archive: now it's installed (usr/java/ I think), but... the environment variables aren't correct or links or ... I don't know.
When I try to start a Java app or send a "java -version" command at the console, it won't work.
Unfortunately I couldn't find any mention on how to set the environment variables in the SUN readme files for Java 1.5.
