The FAQ says there are loaders for .obj and some other formats,
but in the source all I see is the ASE loader.

Where does one find the .obj loader?

You can find an OBJ loader in the Xith toolkit, following the link :
https://xith-tk.dev.java.net/servlets/ProjectDocumentList
