one sent...
i heard the black market for gmail accounts was quite hot some time ago but now they're pretty much giving them out again.
oh and btw, you have probably got 6 invites to send out yourself now... see bottom link on the left hand side once you have signed in.

right there on the left hand side... red hyperlink under the inbox, sent mail, all mail links and green labels box.
it should say "invite 6 friends to gmail"
unless they have decided they expanded their user base enough now... one of the people on the zsnes forums has 11 invites (joined early and been saving them up i suppose)
wasnt long ago that i got mine though... about 3 days ago.
edit: doubt it but maybe you have to open the welcome message at least once before it shows up. there was a note in the welcome message about the invites.

My welcome message says nothing about inviting... and no invite button anywhere. I'll notify in this thread as soon as I can invite.
Oh and thanks a lot JuddMan.

A friend at work had this theory. The invites are purely a marketing thing.. by getting an invite from a friend you are more likely to try it... and switch from yahoo or hotmail. By making the invites a little hard to come by in the beginning they created a demand to get people interested initially.
Now it is all network marketing. Everyone will be given invites to send out, they aren't hard to come by anymore.

yeah true... i mean people have given up selling them, cant even get $2 for 10 of em
and all u have to do is look for some forum to find someone giving them out. maybe they are just keeping it 'invite only' so people feel special when they join or something. your friend could be right
edit: and may as well keep it 'beta' too... everyone wants to be a beta tester! that is sooo cool.
edit2: by the way, i was keeping my last invite for someone i know, and they took it away!
i wonder how those few who were getting bids on ebay will react? the customer is expecting, and the goods have vanished!

Has that happened to everyone (invites removed)? I said to some friend I'd send an invite when I got home. A friend sent me this: http:// http://gmail-is-too-creepy.com/
What do people make of it? I think this page errs on the side of scare-mongering, you don't have to be google to do stuff like this with emails. I fact the only way I can see to stop this is to use pgp on everything you send, and then everyone else needs to use it too. Dan. edit: typo

Actually I think that article barely touches the surface.. the data-sharing and analysis goes much deeper than that.
I have heard of programmers that were hired to do the sort of information tracking behind the targeted advertising on Amazon and such. The individual quit to work for 1/3 the pay because he viewed it as so incredibly immoral.
This involved tracking personal information through cookie trails (cross referencing cookies from many different companies), being paid to steal information from other companies databases, etc.
There is no doubt in my mind at all that google is harvesting every word of every email and tracking it between users to produce information for advertisers and marketing companies. But since this is happening with pretty much everything else anyway.. just live with it and use gmail's nice features. (It's not like your emails don't pass through other servers on their way to the destination no matter what service you use. For sure there are boxes out there that are reading them.)

Thats pretty much what I replies to my friend. Everything you do online is tracked in one way or another for a lot of different reasons. That's what I meant by scare mongering it's not like google are the only ones doing it. The only solution really is not to use computers and what would we do then? Dan.

Not a bad idea to use PGP. If you send an email unencrypted you must be aware that it could be read by someone else (and I don't mean the receiver ).

Agreed. Some people just don't understand that unencrypted email is like a post card - no privacy and no way to stop it from being altered.
Not that this is a big problem most of the time.
Will.

I didnt know people actually still wanted these things. I tried to give mine away a while back but there was a lack of interest If you want one of the invites from me, come to the Unofficial JGO IRC Channel and ask me for one. I have 12 invites right now.
