I was clicking through sourceforge today and came across an older project with very little activity. It was called "The New WORLD - MMORPG".

Does anyone know if this project has continued under another name or if there are any other 3D Engines in development? I should clarify. Are there any other commercially viable 3D engines being written in Java? If not is anyone interested in defining a feature set?

I am currently developing financial software but would like to start work on game oriented software in addition to my day-job.

I guess so. It would be a very difficult task as most of the project would have to be built from scratch. I did see an engine at Java One in 2001 but I am not sure that the whole game was written in Java.

The 3D Engines List contains 34 Java-based 3D engines:

Regrettably, this list is getting a bit old and is infrequently updated, but many of the projects it mentions are still around.  I'm sure a few at least are what you'd call "commercially viable".

Also, I believe Crystal Space now has a Java binding:

So did you start any development? Are you interested in J2ME?
