Using LWJGL and NeHe quad(cube) tutorial.  One big rotating cube with all 6 sides the same png.  I have made a second png to use on the top face.  (heading towards an overhead view above 3d landscape/spacescape.
In the tutorial, you bind the texture then begin the quads, draw six of them then end quads.  I have pulled the top face out and put it in its own begin-end preceded by a new bind texture call.  It works and I get a cube with the top face using my new graphic.  Performance appears to be the same as before.

Questio is:  Is this best practice? Is there a smarter way?

If you were using "subtextures" inside a bigger texture you wouldn't need to rebind. Probably won't make a great deal of difference.

great...seems to work well enough.  On this dinosaur machine, it runs pretty well.
