had another twist on nbody simulation, inverse this time. just a basic 2D fluid-like scene, but this one did explode alot. usually thats bad but here the results are pretty enjoyable. Wink

Working derping with blender again, this time with a HDR Sky and better PBR Shaders.

Nice render! I wish I was as good as you in Blender Cycles too! (But one thing I share with you are these nasty little fireflies everywhere in cycles  Cheesy)

I'm not great at Blender/Cycles at all! Mostly following the tutorials from Blender Guru and BornCG (both recommended) and experimenting with shaders gets you a long way without much difficulty.
Also, the 'fireflies' can be get rid of by increasing the amount of samples... if that didn't kill my laptop that is.

The cake is probably a lie... but it's a delicious lie!

yea, if all particles and springs are defined by pure data i can just stick the pointers into gl-draw methods without the need to copy everything every frame.

turns out, compared to my previous take on physics based on objects, computation -alot- faster and easier to run concurrent. since GC is not in play, it's also more "stable", stuttering-wise.

another issue is double-buffering, with objects that would be even more GC pressure. with pure memory, there is no impact at all.

moving to compute-shaders or opencl is also trivial - and i can still run the "cpu-reference" side by side.

actually, i just love going unsafe. Wink

I spent quite a lot of time trying to get my C++ launcher to work kind of synced with my Java updater & game... Did you know that
System.getProperty("user.home");
does not necessarily return the same as
std::getenv("HOME");
? Welp, I didn't, so I lost at least 40 minutes trying to debug that... All in all, not so bad Smiley I quite like playing around with I/O, in fact.

I've spent the week really excited because the Cubs are in the World Series.  It's a big deal here in Chicago (although probably nowhere else since so many of you don't live in the US and therefore probably do not give a sh*t about baseball).  @Opiop don't you live in Cleveland?  Is it as crazy as it is here?   Also I'm still waiting for your band to come to Chicago!  if you guys come i'll be there.
Missed this! Yeah, Cleveland was crazy! Should've seen the city when the Cavs won Smiley We might be going to Chicago to be on a radio show, we'll definitely play somewhere in the city if we do and I'll let you know! Also, working on recording 2 more songs which means we finally have half of our first EP recorded! Very excited.

On another note; does anyone know of a good book to learn algorithms/data structures? I'll be interviewing soon and I've never really had any lessons on them.

Say you were looking to execute a java program via the command line. You first try to get the version of a potential java installation:
java -version
. Say the output is
'java' is not recognized blah blah blah
. Now you'd like to try and see if you can find a JRE or JDK installation directory somewhere on the computer from which to execute the program without downloading a full JRE. Alright. Would you say that looking for
%JAVA_HOME%
or
$JAVA_HOME
help, or would that be overkill since java is not on the path?

Chicago Cub's celebration parade was apparently the biggest gathering of people in American history!  I work right downtown and live a block from the field so I got to see it all lol.  Definately let me know when/where/if you guys play here, I'll be there!

Trump doesn't appear to be a wise leader or a good role model judging from the past. However, since winning he has refrained from gloating and has promised to unite the country again, acting more 'presidential'. Let's hope that continues

I have a weird feeling he's not ready.  I don't think he thought he was going to win, nor is he prepared for 4 years of the presidency.  I bet he gets tired of it after 1 year.

Today I implemented a grass shader using a geometry shader that creates billboards on the fly. Points are passed in each frame for a set distance around the player and then the geometry is generated...the quads are then alpha blended with distance so they don't pop as they are first rendered. I'll have to improve it in the future but for now I'm happy. My only issue is that I'm not totally happy with are the quads up close to the camera, as they clash with the ground a bit obviously. I plan to change the colour of each quad to blend better with the terrain texture below it.

Don't count on it.  Assuming he hasn't lost his mind...than we're talking about the same Trump as that of the 80s.  Hell he even sketched what he would do if he ever ran for president sometime in the 90s.

Went to Best Buy before work to try and get a NES classic.  There was a line of about 15 people.  Waited for about 10 minutes.  Employee comes out and says he already gave away all the "reservation tickets".  Wtf is that?  I didn't know about any "reservation tickets".  So I was late to work, without a Nintendo.

Thought of a way to avoid mip-mapping. Break the texture into blocks and calculate the color averages of those blocks, then map texels to blocks and blend with the texel based on distance :0

First, I demonstrate texture mapping without this algorithm, then I turn it on and demonstrate texture mapping with this algorithm.

Today, I learnt a little about GameMaker. Well, actually, no...I learnt how to do animation, collision detection, and a whole bunch of other stuff. It's so darn easy to use that I'm already starting to miss having to write my own engine. GameMaker doesn't pose much of a challenge to me, and I tend to get bored with tasks that aren't challenging Tongue

Of course, I'm doing 2D development in GM, not 3D, but I'm getting to that.

I wouldn't call it mipmapping because it's not multiple images in one, but it's definitely a form of texture filtering. It's application is very similar to fog.
