Java games rock!

hi guys.
I've been given a simplistic pinball game to design and code but unfortunately even after 2 years of programming in java I have no idea about graphics.
I read through the java tutorials on the sun website but they weren't really much help.
I was just wondering where to start?
having looked at some basic pong games poeple have done has made some things a bit clearer but I'm still lacking the underlying ideas.
i think about the whole program and i get worried bout creating shapes such as circles and triangles then the collision detection in them.
flippers- i mean come on!!!
far too much to to just jump in feet first and this is something i'd really like to tackle by myself (however no doubt further assistance will be required!)

so any basic tutorials/websites you could suggest would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe this book can help you out. It includes a 2d/3d game library java2d etc. Just got my copy, looks good  Smiley
It uses software rendering, but also mentions lwjgl , gl4java.

Okay, a conceptual basic or two.

All computer games are in effect "dynamic movies".  You sit  ina  tight loops building 1 frame, put it to the screen, move everythign based on how long its been scince you last moved everything, and do it again.

(This is also called a "discrete time based simulation" in tecno-geek speak.)

The first thing i would do if I were you is get a game loop working that can move your ball image horizontally from one side to the other.  Once you have that you have the structure of the game and the rest are inout and position-caclulation details.  (You'll need to do collision too, again done a frame at a time based on the current positions of things.)

I'm with Jeff on this one. The first thing you need to get down is a your game loop (also called a render loop or timming loop). You can look in this section or the 2d section for lots of topics (a lot due to my own frustrations) concerning the topic. Markus Presson has a WIKI tutorial here Both Immudium and I have made succesful implementations of his gameloop. You can find a conversation about it here;action=display;num=1072821056 Immudium's jar file has all code that you can look at for more help (if he doesn't mind me saying so). I just got my loop to work and am currently writting a tutorial on  the matter. Your best bet is tyo first SEARCH the forums here, then try to implement the basic concepts, and then ask questions if you get stuck.
