I am thinking of actually requesting a refund for this game, the controls are utterly ridiculous.

All the buttons on-screen are in Xbox controller format, yet under key bindings there is no way to see what button does what. Wtf?

Default key for interacting is frikkin enter, the jump key is F instead of Space, the sprint key is Space instead of L-Shift. The arrow keys switch the weapons/spells...what is that a D-Pad? No hotkeys for 1-9?

I presume the people that made this game have never played with a mouse and keyboard before? Why in the world does it display Xbox controls when I don't even have one plugged in?

I think this is an absolutely shocking port and all they have implemented during the port is a cursor, keyboard mappings and a terrible depth of field effect to cover up the shitty graphics.

Seriously, am I the only one?

It takes a while to get used to it Smiley Yes it is a bad port because they don't show you the keyboard and mouse controls but the XBOX buttons, but it's also 1000% better than the first dark souls for PC.

You'll get used to it if you keep playing. It's annoying in the beginning but it gets better Smiley
Also you'll miss out on a pretty good game if you get that refund Smiley

Dark Souls 1 was not playable without a gamepad AT ALL
so this is an improvement.
They assume that people will play this with the pad, because they made it specifically for it.

however you still wanna use a controller.

Dark Souls 1 was one of the most amazing games I have ever played. Still only played like 20 minutes of the sequel.

Isn't it sort of suppost to be a rage game, in a way?

Was I before Chuang Tzu who dreamt about being a butterfly, or am I now a butterfly who dreams about being Chuang Tzu?

Seriously, am I the only one?

You can return the game, or you can do yourself a big favor and get the controller. I went down the latter path and I've not stopped kicking myself for not doing that sooner. It not only improves how certain types of game play, I do believe it is simply a must for games which you will play for long intervals. I always ended up with cramps in my hands while playing Skyrim, now that I do that with a controller the game not only plays like a joy but I can just play it in the most relaxed posture ever; sitting up straight with my hands resting on my lap.

Controllers are a friend to all, including PC gamers.

I have a controller...its place is in games that do not require aiming or extensive menus to navigate. Not this imo.

The game was made with a controller in mind. Do the math.

Very rarely, if ever, is a port better with a mouse and keyboard.

Mouse and keyboard aren't superior by default.

If there is any aiming required then yes, mouse and keyboard are instantly superior.

Aiming with a pad is just utter crap imo.

Indeed and the fun part about bow aiming is that you do that carefully, not in the blink of an eye. A controller helps with that too because it allows you to adjust really slowly without having to actually physically move anything; rather you just slightly nudge the stick and keep it in place. If you have to do that with a mouse its all depending on the sensitivity of the mouse, how steady your hand is, how clean your mouse/pad is, etc. etc. Too much room for error.

But a fast paced FPS on the other hand... I don't know how people can play that with a controller. I tried to play Borderlands 2 like that, the only thing I could do was running around drunk while missing absolutely every shot. Madness.

I'm with Gibbo in this one. It's the developer's responsibility to make sure the program's usability isn't crap.

I do like Dark Souls 1 (haven't tried the second one yet), even despite the port issues, but that doesn't excuse the issues themselves.

well its very simple: Dark Souls is not a PC game.
There is a port but even the first port was only made after a huuuge fan campaign.

now you would be like, well why would that excuse releasing a shitty port control wise ?

But I guess the silent agreement was that they said "well ok, we ARE going to create a PC port, but just use a gamepad, we are not going to put any work and time into that"

I havent even bothered trying it in Dark Souls 2, at least the menus actually work nicely with the mouse... not that I do that.
