Hi there,

I'm working on a 2d multiplayer side-scroller similar to the style of Terraria.  I'm using SmartFoxServer for my multiplayer back end, which uses Java.

What I'm wondering is the best way of handling collisions, tile maps, and things like that on the server. I'd like to keep as much of the collision code on the server to prevent cheating, as well as control NPC's and monsters.  I need a way to keep the current state of the tile map on the server as well to control mining and collisions.

How would you recommend I accomplish this? Is there a way to use an existing game engine out there without the rendering component, and just keep a state of the game running without displaying it to any screen? Should I write my own methods to handle tile maps and collisions?

Any help on how to get my head around this would be appreciated!

Hi there,

I haven't seen any responses so maybe I wasn't very clear with my question. Does anyone know if it's possible to use any of the existing java game engines without rendering the screen out? Basically just using them for all of the management/tilemaps stuff without the output to the screen?

As they are basically a wrapper around OpenGL, I don't think that makes any sense.

First of all, you need to separate logic and rendering. Any game engine worth its salt  does this so it's up to you how to actually do it. Obviously you won't need to render anything on the server side. It all comes down to how your game communicates with the server and more specifically what data the server stores and how it handles it.

This is a very all-round answer but the actual "how" is up to you and depends on the server side api you're using.

Perhaps read up on some of the basics of Server-Client communication if you're not familiar with it.

Thanks for responding,

I'm using SmartFoxServer for the server-client communication, so I"m familiar with that regard, I was just unclear on the possibilities of using an API without it's rendering piece to handle collisions and game entities. The previous games I've made didn't need as heavy of a back end as they were little games.

Thanks again, I'll look into a few API's today, do you have any that you'd recommend? I see libgdx around a lot.
