Possible unit varieties:

Normal
Tank
Swarm-like
Fast & deadly, but weak
Kamikaze
Ranged
Flying? Swimming? Anything that can go where others can't.

There are plenty of options if you think about it.
Some of the above ideas can even be combined.

Will do!

@Kpars and @kingroka123, You did not notice all the blood? Well, here it is, modified:

Good enough? Is that enough to satisfy your BARBARIC NEED FOR BLOODSHED AS A PATHETIC EXCUSE FOR ENTERTAINMENT?!?!

I know that this game lacks blood.

Fine... Here you go!

Ignoring the zombie munching on his arm, our hero reflects on his morals. Survival at all costs... But at what cost?

I also got rid of the timer that removes blood...
Seriously though, no more blood or my mom might take away my computer. No joke, I am not kidding... Seriously.
Plus, I am worried of lag. I am updating all of these regardless of anything. They could lag later on...

That's better. Still ungodly blocky.

Also, I think you should implement classes. You could have a gunner class that has a chaingun, a soldier class that can throw nukes to kill a group of zombies, etc.
Oh goodness, I just now realized that to create a class you must create a class.... Gunner.java, Soldier.java, etc...

@Kingroka123
No, b/c there is only a small chance of dropping blood every hit, as there are a lot of hits in a second. I lured a  bunch of zombies, butchered, all until one was left. About a 5th of that blood is the blood of 1 zombie. Again, I have to take into account lag. These are all being rendered.

@kpars
Okay, I will make it what shape now? CIRCLES!? YOU MUST BE MAD! THOSE HAVE NO PLACE IN RETROLOGISTIC GAMES!!!

And yes, strangely enough I have thought of that. But that is what the characters are for! Whatever, next Time we can skype, we discuss character selection... Oh yeah, the level class was useless and removed, replaced by the static game class. I am making all states in the game static for good reasons, such as universal communication, resource mangagment, efficiency, etc. It just is good overall for the client, the computer, and the coder (And hackerz).

Also, I am sensing that you are deriving this from l4d, as I already used 'Tank.' But good suggestions, especially Swarm. That should be a bloody and happy mess... Yum

I've never played L4D.
It's just a set of common unit types in Tower Defence games. Smiley

As for the blood problem, have a hidden switch (key press etc.) that allows you to have more/less blood.

Write your own Smiley
That's what I'd do.

But then again, my advice wouldn't be too useful in this situation. Never liked messing around with other libraries.

It would stop your mom from seeing all the blood...

Lighting isn't that bad, not unless you go really advanced with it.

In regular Java, I would just draw a black rectangle over each image and control the alpha value of it. The alpha value being the brightness. Here's an example:
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
public static void render(Graphics g) {
    // Note that the brightness goes all the way up to 255.
   int brightness = 130;
    g.drawImage(Art.example, 12, 12, null);
    g.setColor(new Color (0, 0, 0, brightness));
    g.fillRect(12, 12, Art.example.getWidth(), Art.example.getHeight());
}

You should be able to do the exact same thing using Slick2D if I am not mistaken, hope that helps Smiley

No no no no no... I am talking about ray-casting *thunder*. But worry not, I found this! I will probably not program anymore for today, it is 1:48 here, and I need my sleep. I'll take one more reply for tonight. Please leave out smart remarks. ends 10 mins from now.

I was for serious.
But if you must know:
Scientific - BOOM!
Religious - I Command ye to BOOM!

So, dynamic lighting. So glad that I only had to scroll down a little bit for resources. These forums rock! Anyways, I will probably go with ray casting, and make a left 4k dead-esque lighting system. HEY, this is becoming a clone, isn't it? Except in glorious 80's graphics. Seeya guys, and Gnight!

Definitely not '80s graphics. Seems more like late '70s.

The '80s didn't have 8x8 textures, as HeroesGrave once said.

Just added in a new lighting system. I was going to go with ray casting, but it was a bad idea, as it would stray the game's graphics far from the original resolution: 8 bit. Plus, this is way easier, less time consuming, and really, do I need even more limited visibility in this game?
Here's a pic:

Although you may have already seen it!
What should I add next, folks?

Thanks. I was getting worried. Then again, I have a list of all that I have heard you have been juggling:
-Pixel space
-art for horde
-music for horde
-4 random projects
-Programming

Don't know how you do it, but you do it good!

Haven't read this while thread, so this may have been spotted already, but I found this bug:

Happens when you run forward in the same direction for a while, the map can't scroll fast enough after a bit it seems. FPS drops while this happens as well (see screenshot).

Ok, the 1.3 video is working. Youtube uploading sucks. But Anyways, I wanted to propose something. I have been logging every single glitch that is notable of maybe becoming a part of the game! Here is one of them, back from the shiny, bright green days of 1.1 and 1.2:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/lTewFJsKBus?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;start=" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/lTewFJsKBus?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;start=</a>
Yeah. Pretty fun. Do you think it should be implemented? If so, How? B/c I like the effect it gives. It looks kinda cool.
1.4 coming soon with more zombie madness!

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!
Go to here for the sound effect of a weapon that will be featured
