I'm considering getting an oculus rift devkit. Has anyone tried one? Is it any good? Or maybe should I wait for the consumer version?

YEAH, my all time favourite topic!!! I would love to have one of those VR Headsets! I can't wait for them to be available as consumer product. Every now and then I watch a video on youtube showing people who try it out. And I always ask myself when I will be able to experience this myself... >_<
I will pay whatever I can for this! Smiley

So to answer your question correctly: no, I haven't tried one. Sad

Yes! Overall it is amazing. Light, tracks well, good frame-rates, I don't notice any tearing. It is very well made. The unfortunate part is that the games I've played don't really seem well made for it. TF2 for example just feels clunky(or maybe it's just 3000 hours of mouse and keyboard talking). I hear the consumer version will have a 1080p screen so I don't know if you should by one now. The screen is good, but 1080p would be a lot better.

I ordered one two months back to integrate it with State of Fortune (and because it looks awesome!). Hopefully it will come in a month or so, after which I will be able to tell you precisely how it is Smiley

There is already a JNI dll (the SDK is windows only for now) created for it as well as lwjgl sample code so it should be quite doable to get it to work.

There will come another development version as well which is closer to the consumer version (full hd screen for example) but they cannot give any ETA on it. If you have the money or want to be one of the first to use it, get one now, otherwise wait until the next dev version or the consumer version.

this version of the rift was really for developers, for people contributing
one shouldn't buy it just to enjoy it. wait for the consumer version

Apparently, the co-founder for Oculus Rift (Andrew Scott Reisse) was killed like...2 days ago-ish. A shame, really.

...considering they just picked up another $16million support. I think they'll do just fine.

I got mine today, time to put the other things in State of Fortune on hold while I try to implement Rift support using JRift Smiley

Yeah I tried it a couple of times with the Rollercoaster demo.
My legs trembled driving down... very effective for me, can't wait to play everything with it. I also never played Doom 3 before, so yeah :D

But I'm surely waiting for the consumer version. They say it will be better in every aspect, and its already very nice, but it lacks the head translating support of course which can make you sick instantly if you try.

I do think that this will, even if gradually, be a major game changer. Everyone is amazed when trying this thing out, even non-gamers. That spells success.

I had it on for 2-3 hours yesterday and didn't have any problems at all with motion sickness, apparently I'm immune Tongue

The demo so far that had the best depth for me was the vr cinema, looking at a 3d movie in there was just awesome.

The quality of the screen is really bad but the comparison photos I've seen with the version they showed at the E3 is like night and day.

Using the JRift version adjusted for Minecrift is really simple, I had the polling of the rotation and so on of the rift up and running in 10 minutes in my game, not using the numbers yet though.
