modem/router longevity, recommendations  (Read 5570 times)

My combo modem/router is going after only a couple of years. The AT&T tech who was here said this is typical. I do have a good quality UPS, so I'm pretty sure that is not the issue. And, the unit is well ventilated. (I don't need wireless.)

A bit of search on modem/router longevity gave me nothing useful. Is it so hard to make a modem/router that is going to last 5 or 10 years? It's not like there are any moving parts.

If anyone has a brand they recommend, I would love to hear about it. AFAIK, the big companies (Toshiba, LinkSys) as well as AT&T (my connection service) all start failing and have to be replaced ever couple of years.

I've never gone wrong with Netgear.

I have a Netgear DG834G. I've had it for at least 5 years.
It has only one problem, which it has had since new: when it starts up, it takes an hour before it connects to my ISP. So I (almost) never switch it off.

Cisco SRP527W here. Never looked back to those shitty consumer units.

They all suck, seriously.

If you have a lot of connections going, wifi, low latency needs... its all a mess

especially wifi - its so weak with almost all routers - never mind the channel, 2-3 rooms and its so weak and disconnects and stuff... forget about playing games
I have lived as a gamer with wifi for like 3 years when I still lived with my parents. So I know like aaaaall the tricks, but they dont really seems to matter, its like placebo.

I currently have a CISCO modem which is really really good and a DLink router which is SUPPOSED to be good. But even without any strain you just cannot connect to wifi often times - even annoying for using wifi on android n stuff

NetGear was horrible imo, but most of them are.

So yeah go Cisco...

I've got an intellinet. Only one problem. occasionally i'll lose the DNS server, but powercycling the router fixes it. it doesn't happen very often anyways.

Thanks for all the replies! I meant to follow up sooner, but I haven't made a decision yet, am living with the problem until, at least, we get past tax day.

I've killed 2 Linksys (one wired, one wireless), and a Belkin (wireless) so far and am now working on destroying a Netgear N600.  To be fair to the Belkin, I think the problem is that there is so much contention on 2.4GHz here, it couldn't cope with all the retrys and went into a sulk.  5GHz is much better, but not all my kit supports it.  Fortunately I've got wired connections too.
