Game off!

Just wanted to share an idea my friend had the other day. We´ve been programming the basics for a game, a kind of "Proof of concept that we actually can finish a game". We anticipated a lot of trouble along the way, so we never really bother with actually coming up with a concept for the game. So when we had a level loader, some entitys, basic movement and collision detection up and running we didn´t really know what to do. That´s when my friend came up with the brilliand idea: Let´s create one graphic design each for the game, along with an idea how it´s supposed to be played. A game off! Now we have two totally different looks for out future game and it´s going to be a blast putting all these finishing touches together!

So, if you´re stuck with something that in some ways is a game, but isn´t fun to play... Try a Game off!

It's an interesting idea...

For me, I usually daydream about every aspect of the game before starting, and when I start I daydream of millions of fans and unicorns and beautiful women all saying "zomg I love your game pickle, will you marry me?"....and then it rains money.

I call it "sanity off".

I think what would be cool is if people all submitted random graphics, and someone had to incorporate all those graphics in one game. It would indeed test creativity.

Agro: Yeah. Kind of like "I wanna be that guy" but even more wierd.


Regarding our "game off": It turns out my friend is a pixel art savant (coming from a creative mind, drawing skills and too many hours building cathedrals and skyscrapers in Minecraft) so I´m now taking charge as Lead programmer and he´s demoted to "artist". Granted, he has 10+ more years programming experience, but good artist are hard to find...

Kidding aside, this has led us from having one unfocused game into two new and different games/WIP that´s far more interesting than what we started out with. I guess I have to start posting screenshots soon..?
