App-ification of everything on the web is going to slowly kill the *proper* web at this rate.
It's the other side of the cycle where we make all applications using a conglomeration of shitty technologies so they run in a browser. Smiley

For whatever reason, this exact suggestion has been made by novice developers on pretty much every Java forum I'm a part of.

You might want to check out some of those, maybe talk to the people suggesting similar projects. You could get an open source thing going with them. Check out these threads.

Also, there are existing programs that do similar things to what you're describing:
