I had followed this tutorial on how to draw stuff like this. Key thing is the angle of the viewer. If it is off everything looks all lame.

First thing I thought was: what a crappy camera, it can't do auto-focus on such a simple shape. (0:18 - 0:21)

Then the cube started to rotate, and it became apparent why the auto-focus struggled (the distance between the low part of the cube and the high part of the cube is huge).

The problem is that you have two eyes, and therefore depth perception. It will only work with one eye closed or from far away.

I don't think so. It's the opposite.

Since your eyes are (relative to the object) more distanced from each other, the difference in the two perspectives of the seen object is bigger. With a big object the difference is smaller.
