I'm going to buy a server at 123system.net.

I'm not interested in a big VPS, and I was going to get their $3 a month VPS. I decided to google 123system promo codes, after about 10 mins, I found a 40% off recurring, and a 50% off recurring, Sad the 50% did not work, so I decided to upgrade still to the $6 a month server, which doubled pretty much everything from the $3 one. Stats:

$3.60 a month, $43.20 a year (have to pay per year to get 40% off)

Guaranteed RAM
512MB
Burstable RAM
1024MB
Disk Space
20GB
Bandwidth
1TB/Month

This seems good enough for testing server based games (still completely new to networking) and other random server needed programs to learn.

Before I go ahead and buy it, I thought I should ask what options I should set it too.

In the configure Server, im guessing Hostname and Root Password is kind of the admin password? yes?

And what operating system?

out of all of them, I have only heard of Ubuntu but I have never used any linux operating systems, iv only ever used a Mac and Windows.

Theirs:(all have 32 bit and 64 bit)
CentOS 5.7
 Fedora 15
Ubuntu (9.10 , 9.04, 8.04)
Suse 11.1
Slacewave (Only one to only have 32 bit)
Owl Current

And what Control Panel, Webmin or Kloxo/LxAdmin

Thanks, and If anyone is interested, would you mind running me through simple things if needed? or will it be worth while posting on the forums them one person helping? Smiley

I suggest you pay 3$ for a (single) month to try out, you don't need to commit for a full year yet. Just try it out. The hostname is only to give a name for your VPS at 123systems.net - nothing more. Root password is indeed the most important password on your VPS. It is the root/admin password. With it you have full control over your VPS.

Like with any other VPS provider you usually get a Control Panel, which one you choose doesn't matter in the beginning, and the OS is also a bit vague for a beginner.

I guess it's easier to just be told what to do, but you can always reinstall the OS through the control panel so there's no harm in trying all the buttons, making mistakes, getting stuck, you can always reinstall to any OS which only takes 1 button press (from the Control Panel).

Install CentOS 32bit and take Kloxo Control Panel.

$43.20 isn't to much, and can get the bit better one from now for 40% off, which is about the price of the $3 VPS, Just I have to pay for one year.

I currently have a bit of money sitting in my wallet that I'm doing nothing with, I'm probably just going to buy 2 complete new monitors, just because my second monitor is my TV, which stands about 2cm's higher then my 1st monitor.

And your recommending their VPS, so it cant be too bad, I probably will only have it for a year, than cancel it / bit better, or refresh if I really like it.

also If I read and understood their terms right, they can add to your checkout if your buying something for under $3 and can put it up to $10, soo the 1 month could cost me $10 instead of $3

Wait, they can tax you for 10$ if you buy something for 3$ and in order to not get robbed in this way you're going to pay them 40$ up front?

well, I'm just saying, if I'm going to buy a server for 1 month for $3, going to get taxed to $10, thats already 1/4 of the payment for 1 year, just for one month, and also, I get less of a server then I am for $42.30, Because I live in Australia, its only going to cost $40.15 right now, because of the conversion too.

btw, are you able to shut down the VPS for lets say a day or 2? letting no one access it?
