I know the site has its own IRC channel, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me what time it is generally... active? Its just I haven't seen more then two people besides me on there the last couple of times I logged in, and I was wondering if it was always like this? If so could anyone tell me a more active IRC channel? Ty for any help.

I've never visited the JGO IRC. If you have questions, post them on the forum. IRC is only useful for... things.

There's plenty of other IRC channels around the world, those centered around programming are probably littered with people asking questions I'd imagine.

I've got a shell in a few irc channels that I once in a blue moon visit and then immediately leave.

The question I am trying to answer has been on the forum for several days, I get that people don't want to dig through my code, I'm not going to ask (just give the option), but there are a series of questions about how I formatted my code that would be easier to address in a chat.

PS here is where my question was http://www.java-gaming.org/topics/double-buffering-fail/26902/view.html

also teletubo, that forum is much more populated, but its supposed to be for lwjgl, so when I ask about pure java stuff like double buffering most people aren't willing to answer (understandably so), Also Ironically enough I found out about this forum from that channel... How do I get to the ##java irc channel?

You're normally pretty likely to get an answer on #lwjgl, just depends who's actually there at the time.

And how you ask a question... if you're trying to be polity and ask:
Quote
- hello
- anybody here?
- can I ask a question?
- I'm having trouble with something and I need help
then you'll be blatantly ignored. Ask the question, don't ask whether you can ask a question. Pointing

As for the failure of #jgo, well, I put the link in the JGO header months ago, and invested quite some time in getting it populated, mostly by being there myself and answering questions. After about two months or so, it turned out it wasn't going anywhere, so I left. Within weeks the channel was abandoned by everybody except Mazon and ra4king, who I suspect login to that channel automatically.

It would probably take a few years to create a successful IRC channel, and I think it's not worth the effort. All useful information posted there is 'lost' and of no value to the JGO community. And having a chatlog is not really sufficient to retain that information, as it lacks structure.

Somehow embedding the last 8 lines of the #lwjgl channel in the header might be interesting, especially if it updated in realtime...

'We' (the community in #lwjgl) really don't want all JGO-ers to join the channel.

If you meant #jgo, then that might be something to consider...

Nah, I meant #lwjgl, on account of that being the oldest and most established and best Java game related place on the web.

Currently people with Java2D questions are kindly but forcefully escorted out, so sending JGOers to #lwjgl seems like a bad idea Smiley

I really do wonder why people persist with Java2D for making games... it's like a Windows dev trying to use GDI.

I am/was one of those persistent bastards. There is a certain... familiarity with just using bog-standard JDK classes and the AWT canvas, plus deployment is a single jar no-brainer.

But even I'm persuaded by the shockingly poor performance that people have reported in this forum, plus LibGDX is simply too awesome to ignore Smiley

I'm glad #JGO isn't populated, otherwise that would be another thing to distract me from coding  Grin
