Hey, you! I wanna start a discussion Have you seen the new console " Ouya"? They want to run android on that console. Guys from the XBox and others are working together to create such a console. I'm pretty intrested in your thoughts. I personally think this is an awesome step for Linux/Android. I want linux to compete windows and others. Also, this could be a good thing for newbe programmers. Easy language: Java. There is supposed to be a development kit for non-programmers for programming games. This sounds really intresting. I myself can't wait to run libGDX stuff on that console Resources: Here is the link to kickstarter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-consoleThe just hit 4.000.000$, when I klicked on the link myself. Let the games begin!

If all games are free, what is the incentive to develop games?

Too bad they are IMHO clueless with their naming... * Hey! - Hi super best friend! * Look at my Ouya - I never want to talk to you again * Almost as bad as Bing.

I think it's a nice oportunity for Java gaming (if there's something like that...). In any case, i backed it so i have a two-controller, easy to hide, snes/n64/whathaveyou emulator

Too little RAM ? The laptop I'm using right now, and which I've been using for 4 years has 1GB Ram. You, kid, might be a little spoiled.

XBox 360 has only half a gig of RAM and it seems to do fine. One piddly USB 2.0 port seems kind of weak if they're planning on supporting external storage, but maybe it'll handle a hub.
I still think it's vaporware, designed to push all the kickstarter buttons. The only thing that separates it from an outright scam is if the founders believe their own story, and I'm reserving judgment on that one.

Pretty much agree with sproingie. I think it's vaporware.
The hardest part is developing the games. And the games are going to be free? Does not compute...

I disagree. I think this has potential. They themselves said in the video that the design is done and prototypes have been created. Also considering that donations are going at $100 a second, this won't be easily ignored.

There is a quote by Notch on the Kickstarter page, so he must have said something publicly about it. As of this post the Kickstarter stands at $1.15 million....with 29 days to go

people who think this could succeed have no idea about the whole market learn about the entire history of SEGA then understand why apple never made a console
and then come back and rethink
A console that solely depends on third party multi-platform content will not be commercially successful anyway. And creating a console is a HUGE risky investment. Which is why we only have 3 companies doing it.

They all bombed ! =D Never heard of that Apple "multimedia technology platform" device before. Well then lets say "never again" made a console =P What is interesting though is, that this Apple device is conceptually similar to the original XBox, which basically was just a boxed windows PC...

Guys I just read the FAQ, the whole "Free to play" thing is bit of a misnomer. They mean that every game will be either free or have a free demo. No game is paid only, this way you can try before you buy. Of course there will be support for paid games AND paid in-game items so relax. From the FAQ: - Business model is same as everything, you get 70%, they get 30%. This looks like Google Play will not be on it, but some sort of Ouya-only marketplace. - This thing isn't just games, it can also have apps. - If you are a dev and want to be featured early, contact them at devs@ouya.tvWith the Kickstarter well above $2 million on the first day, this thing has a HUGE potential. EDIT: Do note this has support from Notch and many other leading indie/AAA devs.

I totally don't get the point of any of these devices. I highly doubt there will ever be a successful console that doesn't fall into the classic model: 1) Sell hardware at major loss (at least initially) 2) Make money on software fees.
So if the company in question doesn't have hundreds of millions to billions to risk on sell-in..I wouldn't hold my breath. Develop stuff for Lego mindstorm if you want a geek factor platform.

AFAIK Nintendo sold the Wii with a (tiny) profit, from day one. You could argue that the only reason Sony and Microsoft sold their hardware at a loss, was because otherwise it would become too expensive for average Joe. I think the price of this console it low enough to be affordable for said Joe and thus, as a result the financial strategy might be more Nintendo-like.
