2023?
We haven't even landed people on Mars yet...let alone have people live on it. All that in 11 years?
Unlikely.
Either a scam or some a really optimistic R&D department.

Paying a domain for scam is really a job. Maybe they'll leave us with tons of canned food, a tent, water machine and PC with satelite access.

I hope people realize that a human would die just standing on the mars surface for too long.

Because of the radiation, every manned mars mission, especially the first one, is a race against time to dig yourself into the ground before you die.
That is if you survive the months in space...

Just imagine, they have to train, like 8 hours a day or whatever, in space, just so that they are not loosing too much muscle and bone, so that they will not SHATTER when they come in contact with gravity again.
They really really have to use a revolving spaceship which fixes the gravity issue...

That being said, I'm still optimistic.

I actually don't think anyone will be living out the rest of their potential lifetime, on Mars. At least not in 2022 that is.
I still hope they try, though. It shall be spectacular!

Also, in regards to radiation and such they seem to have that figured out. Their FAQ is quite elaborate, for a scam.

I don't think this is a scam. I don't believe anyone would put so much money in such a website, would interview people, make these animations, just to troll other people.
And if that is not a scam, I think they kind of know, what they do. There would be too much people (scientists) against them.

Personally, I find this project really intresting. I mean... living on the Mars is like the dream of flying in the history of the human. But I would never sign up for such a project. I really love my life here on Earth, even if on the Mars there are the most intresting things to see in the whole universe, I would not go there, because of the missing social contacts, and the overall hard life. (And I would not have time to program!!! :O)

How would they figure out things like medicine? The people that are to live the rest of their lives on another planet can't be without medicine, right?

They "plan" to send a huge batch of supplies before any humans arrive there. Also, they "plan" to send 40 people there. If someone gets some medical problems, you can always send some medicine (and maybe one of those med-pods they have in Prometheus Smiley )

Reads "Crap! I forgot my insulin"

On a serious note: Unless they have a preexisting condition, how would they get sick? I mean.. Unless their own bodies are at fault, like cancer.

Has anyone here seen the movie "Gattaca"?

and they'll also probably send people with different backgrouds, like a doctor, a geologist, a programmer, etc.

I'd do it, but not for the first group. Maybe if there were already like 500 people there, "fast" internet access and such, I'd do it!

Well, old people usually eat a lot of pills every day. If there is not trip home, they will eventually want those pills as well Smiley

I have a feeling that 4 people on a separate planet for 2 years before the next group arrives will take it's toll on the astronauts. It must be really, really lonely to be alone on Mars with only 3 other people that you hardly knew before to socialize with.

"fast" internet access

Define "fast".  At the speed of light your best ping time to Earth and back is six minutes.

I think the idea is that they train together for 10 years before they go. They will know eachother very well.
It's still very lonely though... Unless you bring a console Smiley

Huh

Best: 2 x (249200000 - 149000000) km / c = 11 minutes.
Worst: 2 x (249200000 + 149000000) km / c = 44 minutes.

Mars gets as close as three light minutes from Earth according to my extensive research of googling for approximately 30 seconds.  There could be inaccuracies in my otherwise unassailable methodology  Tongue

You can probably fill it up from the start with a lot of games and then you can download more if you don't use TCP/IP but some other streaming protocol with redundancy or something   Tongue

There are protocols developed that are designed for ultra-high-latency links like intra-solar-system communication.  I'm not familiar with any of them other than that they have tons of data redundancy and error correction built in.

Hmm, my bad. I didn't expect the orbit of Mars to be that elliptical. So... 6-44 minutes it is!

As for having a speedy internet, they'd just need to bring a snapshot of the current internet and plug it into their LAN. Caching is the solution to every problem.

44 light minutes?  That can't be right, that's over 5 AU, and Mars is only roughly 1.6 AU out.  (Ohhh right, round trip, opposite sides... math is hard)

Let's just say you won't be Skyping your folks on Earth.

That seems about right.
But hey, if there is a corrupt lead on mars and people overthrow it, its a free planet !

Actually that brings me to an interesting point: What laws would apply on Mars ?
Who owns Mars ?

Maybe I really should be the first, to create that initial Mars Society... A chance of actually creating a working system...

I didn't do the math, but when Mars is at one side of the galaxy and earth on the other, gotta be long. Of course cannot be > 2 AU, but you cannot send data straight through the sun of course...

Unless you use the 'instant' messaging feature. Oh, there it is:
"Unlimited access to email and other communication channels to keep in touch with friends and family back on Earth;"

The inconveniences just add up! D:
