I've been having problems getting my friend so that he can play the game i've been working on. He's running 1.6 on his laptop and his computer apparently isn't good enough to upgrade to 1.7. I run 1.7 on my computer and i believe that my game is being compiled with 1.7. So, how can I change my project to compile for compatibility for 1.6?

you need to use the -target and or -source command line options of javac...

i.e.

javac -source 1.6 -target 1.6 ...

or if you are using an IDE then change the relevant IDE's configuration for your project

Let's hit the first issue: "his computer apparently isn't good enough to upgrade to 1.7"...... wut?

Any computer can install Java 1.7, how did you determine that it's "not good enough"?

....he may have a Mac, in which case, he will have issues. Some beyond mere OS idiosyncrasies but we shan't go there  persecutioncomplex

He doesn't have a mac. He's tried to install it a couple of times, but it told him that it couldn't.
