Hi,

I posted a post on this before and got some good replies bout some youtube videos and i tried that,
But that didn't really work for me because it didn't really give you something to do they just explain everything and don't let you practise.
I do know some basic java and i would like to start making games (2d at first) or at least learning how to.
So if anyone could give me something other than those youtube vids i'd really appreciate it.

Thx in advance Cheesy.

Well, try to make simple programs after each video testing out the functions. There's not much else you can do besides that, as there's no way for us to learn Java for you.

I promise videos are the easiest route, if you're not already, watch theNewBostons. His are great.

Stay in school.

Take those videos as a reference and start playing around with the code! I (and a lot of people) learned from messing around! Learn how to make a basic game loop. Draw a rectangle as a player, make it move. Draw some text. Every little thing you learn will be very useful in the future! And of course...not hurry! Rome was not built in a day! I've not looked at the videos, myself.

But I was wondering, did you check out the references listed via the link right under our logo? Especially, the "tutorials" section?

try the book Developing Games in Java by david brackeen, Im in chapter 3 now and it seems to be working well for me. it was originally written for java 1.4 but the web site has some updates and any other problems can probably be solved by posting here. it starts with enabling graphics mode, excluding a excerpt about threads that are used throughout the book, and according to the table of contents goes up through complicated topics like bsp trees and A*. I have found the explanations quite clear. in addition all of the source code is available at www.brackeen.com/javagamebook

You said you knew some basic java. How much? If you haven't really been learning the language for at least a couple of months, then I would suggest you take a peek at some tutorials based on graphics, game loops, and problem solving. Also, a good way to make games is to just experiment.  Cheesy This website has quite a few tutorials and I would suggest you check them out.
