In my humble opinion, a beginner should rather learn OpenGL with the Red Book before using high-level engines like Ardor3D and JMonkeyEngine. Good luck.

I suggest learning OpenGL. First you should read the Redbook as gouessej mentioned, then read these tutorials for more advanced 3D with OpenGL. Good luck!
