I have been using java about 2 years now. I had SOME experience of programming a shooter like invaders(Which i accidently deleted). Though I want to make a game like advanced wars. Any way of doing this?

Well first off, stop accidentally deleting your code.  Put your code on a place like github or bitbucket or sourceforge.

Not sure what advanced wars is ... anything like "advance wars", the GBA game?  I would suggest taking a look at Slick2D for starters.
