YES! The little robot/duke/ghost would look good. You could use the red version for unread and the blue version for read, or something like that.  |

Gah... back to the drawing board.
EDIT: Did you try the normal image for unread, and a gray scale version of the image for read. That's kind of what it looks like the current image does.

Size is fine, but I don't recommend decreased opacity on the "has new posts" icon, might work confusing.
