JGO just came back after a minor ddos-attack (only a handful of IP addresses, but still...) I don't really care about uptime, so I took the webserver down to investigate. It's really trivial to bring down an Apache server by just flooding it with requests, so I wonder what they are trying to prove here. Now going to add a few scripts that will put IPs in the firewall if they send 'undesirable' amounts of traffic.

Some how attacking a forum full of programmers doesn't seem to be a good idea... maybe that's just me. Not a forum of hackers though, that would be worse

Now going to add a few scripts that will put IPs in the firewall if they send 'undesirable' amounts of traffic. I also added the 'Reply' button, next to 'Quote', to hopefully get rid of those needless (nested) quotes, which will also reduce the amount of downtime.

I didn't see a reply button next to the quote button?

Riven, I see it now I didn't see it before. edit: though I feel like the fact that you can hit reply to a specific message, that it should still add something, at least like >>Riven or >Riven #9 or some identifier automatically as to which you had replied too specifically.

If you want to quote somebody or refer to another post, just hit 'quote'. I was simply getting tired of all the quotes that referred to the last reply.

I don't really get the funny part of the joke, but let's state the obvious and say replies are inherently referring to the previous message, unless it contains quotes.

Although not necessarily at these forums but I usually assume a reply with no indication of who it is too is directed at the OP. However I typically read all threads start to finish on this and other favorite forums, so not a real issue for me personally.

Could you make the reply button quote only the message you're quoting, but not nested quotes?

I'm working on it I also just waged magic in SMF to speed it up again. You guys are reading way too many pages! I brought CPU time of mysql back from 80% to 4% after quite a few hours of profiling. I hope I'll forget about this PHP hackery session soon.

Okay, I added a hook to the Post functionality, that demands that at least 10% of new posts is content you have written yourself.

I like it, although I'll begin to hate it soon. I just tried to post a one word answer to a quote and I got the warning. You also have a spelling mistake in the last sentence: If yuo believe this (new) threshold needs adjustment, post here.

That's exactly what it is meant to stop. The signal-to-noise ratio was way too low. Okay, I added a hook to the Post functionality, that demands that at least 10% of new posts is content you have written yourself.
Yes, there are (currently) ways around it, but at least it makes you think twice.

So I was redirected here for trying to say 'Thank you, I never knew that' while quoting someone.. The following error or errors occurred while posting this message: Over 90% of the text in your attempted post consisted of quotes. Please either remove (nested) quotes or write something interesting. If you believe this (new) threshold needs adjustment, post here. That's kind of lame, I can't quote somebody and say 'Thank you, I never knew that'. At least consider that a minimum Riven D: Edit: just read '10% of new posts is content you have written yourself.'
