Hi, everyone. I'm in the process of looking into Java game development. I like the idea that Java is very portable. I installed Ubuntu Linux 10.10, because I really wanted to try Open Source development.

My question is this. When using Ubuntu, OpenJDK is the available option. As I said, open source is fine, but I am concerned about the development process. I would like to write software that is also available for Windows and Mac OSX. If I work with OpenJDK, is this going to be a problem?

I noticed posts on the web where some were complaining about the JDK. For example Android Development and Eclipse. I am sticking to Netbeans on Ubuntu, but since I heard that there are Java issues with OpenJDK and an existing code base like Android SDK, it leaves me to wonder what kind of issues I might run into in the future. BTW, I am not looking to do Android development at this time.

If someone has experience with this, please explain how this OpenJDK vs. JDK concept works out. I am very happy with Ubuntu, and even more happy when I don't have to install outside of the repository (Just a personal preference, to stay in house), so OpenJDK would be great.

Also, if you use OpenJDK, please mention any game projects you worked on. Did you test it with Windows? Mac OSX? Linux? and so on.

OpenJDK appears to be a bit better on Linux than the Oracle one. At least according to my bug reports.

You don't have to go outside the repository to install a Sun/Oracle JDK - the package is called "sun-java6-jdk"

OK, sounds good. I'll try the OpenJDK first.

btw, princec

I played level 1 of Revenge of the Titans this morning at 1 am. I immediately bought the Full version. I'm loving it. It's so addictive. I'll keep tabs on how well it runs and post if there is anything in the right thread. Love it, love it, love it.

Are you guys going to make any new wallpapers available for the game anytime soon?

Not by default. You have to enable the "partner" repository in aptitude.
