I'm afraid the server's suffered a somewhat catastrophic meltdown. I'm trying to get it all back up and running again but it's not easy. In particular it involves Linux, and everything involving Linux is difficult, obscure, and crap.

Right now I've managed to get the Puppygames website back, sort of ish, using smoke and mirrors.

No, Microsoft Windows, IIS and other Microsoft products are really crappy.

I assume you have a backup. What is complicated for you in order to solve your problems with your servers?

Sure, Microsoft software is way crappier, but that doesn't make Linux software easy when you're not used to it.

Editing seemingly randomly located config files can feel like trial-and-error at best.

In regards to server setups, I have found setting up WAMP on windows, and installing SMF very simple.

Shame about the server being down.

Nothing compared to Linux Smiley On windows you basically get this wizard where you press [continue] 10 times and off you go. On linux you're messing with config files, trying to bind Apache to PHP and MySQL to PHP and whatnot. Once you did it, it's relatively easy, but for some reason it nearly always requires some minor tweaks you forgot about.

are we talking completely new web server, database and mail setups? then that's going to be a fair bit of work ...
could we setup a temp site until then?

It is wrong. There is an equivalent of WAMP for Linux that is called LAMP.

what are the requirements for getting a temp site up?

I can at least help with storage, if thats a problem, I have a decent amount of Gigs free on a high speed webserver.

So: one disk died a bit, and another new disk is on, with a fresh RH4 install on it. Apache is running, and PHP probably works. There appears to be no MySQL daemon. We've rescued all the database files and websites off the dead disk and got it all on the new disk.

Now the httpd conf is a bit buggered as it relies on Tomcat and some weird subversion stuff Oddlabs were using. And the permissions on various files are all wrong after the copy. Grr. Ssh is working with key auth.

I've got a clever linuxy dude on the case called Phil Crumm who is sorting it out at some expense. ETA this weekend/early in the week with any luck.

That sounds awfully long, but heck, goodluck, and save all the commandline scripts / config file modifications for next time!

Computers can do that?

Web servers can be a PITA (in linux) because the setup that you use is -- well often complicated. This type of setup is definitely encouraged by Apache and co.

I make a much simpler setup last time with just using tomcat and skipping the rest. But if you need php etc for forum software...  Well YMMV, but  I try to keep it real simple with 100% default install (i use slackware, so its generally secure). I got our last server back up in just 2 hours with a complete reinstall (but no complicated RAID/nfs setup with that machine).

I would like to also reiterate my desire to donate when i can do it without paypal (I will not use payapl --ever).

This is a long and rocky road.

The plan is still: get it all up and running. Then flee to a better host - probably virtual private servers. Or if money permits, a dedicated server again, running several virtualboxes. Anybody have a need for a VPS other than Puppygames and LWJGL? We could do with some financial assistance Smiley

My $0.02:

Use a high-end VPS. It's cheaper than a dedicated server, but the hardware is WAY better and way more reliable. You get RAID1 at least, faulty hardware doesn't bring the virtual machines down, as instances are easily be migrated to somewhere else. But again, use a high-end VPS, not some crap overpriced VPS.

I've had incredibly good luck with Linode.com. Admittedly though, I've had several years experience doing my own server administration, so that makes it a bit easier.

EDIT: Oh! And it's probably the best bang for your buck VPS around (mine only costs $20 a month).

So any new infos?

only the website and forums are down.

You can get all LWJGL download packages including javadoc and access svn (which even contains a copy of the LWJGL website) from http://sourceforge.net/projects/java-game-lib/

Nightly Build farm server is at https://www.newdawnsoftware.com/hudson/view/LWJGL/

and as usual the helpful irc channel at #LWJGL irc.freenode.net is active.

Just got the lwjgl site to repair now, it's on another disk though which I have to get theplanet to plug back in. Hopefully back online tonight, and then we'll figure out where to move everything after it's all settled.

Check out Webfaction as a new host. Something between shared and VPS - you get a standard unix account, cool admin tools, many things work out of the box + you can compile & run pretty much anything you want on your own. Support is top notch, not from 3rd party know-nothings following scripts to get rid of you Wink

Backups are easy with RSnapshot. Almost like Time Machine, heh.

Can we at least get the domain name pointing at the LWJGL Sourceforge page until the site comes back up ?
http://sourceforge.net/projects/java-game-lib/

It would at least allow people to get the lwjgl download packages, access svn, grab the javadoc and put a stop to the constant stream of questions on the irc channel about LWJGL's demise.

Good news or bad news? Smiley

Good news - the mysql db is intact and the forums survive. Hurrah!
Bad news - I can't seem to find the rest of the website.

How would you like to proceed?
