Wasting my life programming ?

It just blows my mind is all.  I want my peice of the pie.

It's all about jumping into the right business at the right time. Anyone can look at something in hindsight and wish they had been there, but knowing where to put your time and money is what the real skill is (or the luck).

But no longer due to lack of funds 

I'm not sure that working 60-80 hour weeks to get shafted when the cash runs out is really worth it.  But I'm sure some studios are well funded and managed and don't have these issues.  That said, the 'death-march' does seem to be a common occurrence in the game dev. industry.

I'm not sure I'd do it again.  I love developing games but being screwed around like that is no fun.

until the company ran out of money. I was also working long weeks for pretty much the whole time and was constantly under the pressure of the company potentially crumpling. Finally it did.

On the bright side, that job made me a very attractive candidate for a number of companies (with money), of which I was able to take my pick. Now I'm working at http://www.ngmoco.com/ which has plenty of moolah. It's also a wonderful to change to be at a company that people have heard of and that my games are going to be played by thousands or millions of people. Awesome!

Bill Gates is a perfect counter example of this 'wasting your life pgming' idea; for those who don't know the Microsoft story started with a BASIC interpreter Gates wrote and ported to a bunch of the new fangled 'micro comuters' back in the day with the Apple II being the most succesful prominent.   Get that?  A BASIC interpreter.  Do you know how f*cking simple a BASIC interpreter is to write?  Especially the crappy BASIC of those days?  That trivial product, plus a shark like instinct for business (can't discount that) was the at the root of a $BILLION$ business.

Bill Gates added floatingpoint support to the language. That's not rocket science, but it's also not just another interpreter.

Well okay, I have a job (not game related) and a girlfriend and sometimes go out to play football with friends, and stuff ... but I'd say 90% of my spare time I'm writing games ... and it's been like that for more than one year !

Even sometimes when I'm just taking a walk with my girlfriennd I'm actually far away thinking about some algorithm to enhace performance of something .


Do you guys ever felt like that ? Or is it just me ?

Well I won't stop writing games anyway, I just want to feel that I'm not the only one

You're very good at programming, you should continue doing it especially if you really enjoy what you're doing. And people (like me) enjoy playing what you've done.

I like the games, they're whacky. Goes to show the personality of the person who developed it.

I have job(also not game related), university, girlfriend, sometimes I go out at night for some beer and also working on my game project during the rest of time(some weeks I sleep 3-4 hours or even less per day )...
It's kinda passion, it's like playing the game you like, but even more interesting

If your truly passionate about something you can't go wrong. Just about any 'dumb' activity that I've done in the past has served me in other area's.

Sure you have to keep an eye out to keep your priorities sorted, like don't be programming while you should have been running out to buy a present for your (girl)frends birthday tomorrow...

I started working on my current project on Dec. 30th, since then I've written over 100 classes, all while being a full time student. Instead of going to Panama City Beach (the traditional spring break destination in my state) I spent last week debugging. I ended up meditating on the fact that I don't have much of a social life, but I came to the conclusion that it doesn't really matter... I'm doing what I enjoy, I don't care if it's not typical.
