Does anyone have any experience of reading the SDTS DEM files off of the USGS website?

AFAIK, nobody has written a SDTS loader for Java3D. It's not that hard to read them, you just have to write the code to do so.  Grin

Programming is essentially a markup language surrounding mathematical formulae and thus, should not be patentable.
