IBM's license for Java was obtained before the GPL'ed version was released - no reason they wouldn't continue using that - except that IBM seem fine about open source stuff, as after all, they largely sell services rather than software.

Getting back on topic, the New York Times has run another article indicating that this deal is very close to happening, either today (Friday) or early next week: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/03/technology/business-computing/03blue.html?_r=1

JAVA hit $8.40 after hours, up from around $4.70 before the announcement of this deal, so with a reported buyout price of $9.50 a share, the market's giving this somewhere around a 75% chance of going through.

So we'll probably find out pretty soon what this will all mean for Java...

Sun's investors could be seriously displeased with this, I'd imagine, especially if the stock craters again tomorrow morning, though IBM could just be doing this to kill off some of the clauses in the deal that they objected to, we'll see...

It's funny that bigger company can either benefit or cause damage to competitor just offering take-over. If smaller company ignores the bigger ones offer then smallers shares drop a lot. Bigger company doesn' really lose much in both cases. This same thing was with Microsoft and Yahoo.
