IBM's license for Java was obtained before the GPL'ed version was released - no reason they wouldn't continue using that - except that IBM seem fine about open source stuff, as after all, they largely sell services rather than software.

hehe and that's would be cool if they continue this way Smiley,  because IMHO they have big trouble to bring out quality soft as WebSphere / Portal / rational perf test, I used all of those and ... what is the workd ? hum... burk...

Getting back on topic, the New York Times has run another article indicating that this deal is very close to happening, either today (Friday) or early next week: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/03/technology/business-computing/03blue.html?_r=1

JAVA hit $8.40 after hours, up from around $4.70 before the announcement of this deal, so with a reported buyout price of $9.50 a share, the market's giving this somewhere around a 75% chance of going through.

So we'll probably find out pretty soon what this will all mean for Java...

Offer's now been pulled because IBM got annoyed with some of the specifics: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/06/technology/business-computing/06blue.html?_r=1&hp

Sun's investors could be seriously displeased with this, I'd imagine, especially if the stock craters again tomorrow morning, though IBM could just be doing this to kill off some of the clauses in the deal that they objected to, we'll see...

Quote
The deal’s collapse raises questions about Sun’s next step, since the I.B.M. offer was far above the value of the Silicon Valley company’s shares when news of the I.B.M.

you know why the deal was such a higher price - cause sun is worth more. Roll Eyes

hmm wonder how hard the hit will be anyway time to start buying sun stocks again...

I also love how this whole story is pretty much all coming out of the nytimes from ppl 'close' to the talks.
also I'd doubt you can label anyone an 'investor' who just rides the train up for a bit.

It's harder to read code than to write it. - it's even harder to write readable code.

It's funny that bigger company can either benefit or cause damage to competitor just offering take-over. If smaller company ignores the bigger ones offer then smallers shares drop a lot. Bigger company doesn' really lose much in both cases. This same thing was with Microsoft and Yahoo.

I prefered Turdburglar or whatever his name was.
