Actually, it isn't....It is part of the re-focusing of Java and it's consumer reach. More to come.....

I like the new java.com much better. It doesn't distract people for downloading Java runtime (the main thing there you know) and nicely propagate what all Java is Also it looks more serious when there are no games on title page.

I like it too, esp the red. one note: on the download page the left side is empty making the page look wierd. still functional but wierd.

You guys cannot be serious? All the cool stuff including desktop applications, games, cell phone apps, etc. is gone (sorry, it's gone, I don't recall every detail anymore, but it's gone). What about the Mars Rover application? What about the real-time air traffic updates etc. Where is it all?
Hey, if I am the only one here in these forums, I guess, it's time for me to shut up. I cannot believe that nobody notices nor cares? That's the "flagship" site for Java!!! OK, the download is still there, but besides, there is no point for anyone to visit the site... You guys are telling me you checked up on the "Java + Linc Volt" or "Java + Ricoh" stuff? I guess some companies payed lots of dollars to replace the cool stuff with lame product advertisements.

Well i dislike websites similar to this new java website... to me it looks like one of those place holder websites which capitalise on misspelt URLs. i.e. i don't trust sites that look all flashy.
But i guess i am not really the demo graphic they are after... I assume they are after the non-technical person who is more swayed by looks than functionality.

Actually, the site is targeting consumers and not developers in any way. What is is seeking to do is communicate how Java is used in the technology and content that consumers use. This was not something that was clearly conveyed in the old site. While I am eager to see more content on the site, and it will come, I do like the cleanness of the new site.

I'm pretty much with Chris on tis one. When non-IT ppl ask me about java I would refer them to java.com If they ended up on the old site there first reaction was did I miss-spelled it? if not overwhelming to begin with.
While it's sad that a showcase for certain stuff has been closed down, there are other channels.
Java.net seems to be getting more structured; esp with the 'newer'/'high profile' projects like netbeans glassfish hudson metro grizzly seem to turn into usable sites with content. There is still a large part that is well, messy. It's still fun to plough though and find hidden gems though. As java.net is cleaned up more it's sad that the games part is so neglected.

The Dutch translation ( www.java.com/nl) is horrific. You can almost 'decompile' every sentence back to the English one. It's really really poor.

I just checked the Swedish one, and it's really poor as well.
"Hämtning"? "Webbläsaren Netscape"? And a lot of the phrasing is really awkward, like the direct order under "verifiera din Java-installation".

Excuse me for necroing this thread. Please please please. It's been 6 months ago since I saw the java.com frontpage, and a few minutes ago, I coughed my left lung out in shear agony. The title of the Dutch download page is in freaking Spanish! Click to enlarge: The i18n team might as well be... fired.

My god, that's probably the worst localization I've ever seen . And funny in an 'engrish' kind of way. "Als foutmeldingen specifiek termen bevatten zoals JRE en JVM, houden we ze achter" ROFL!!! Better not to bother with localization at all instead of putting up people with this mess.

Following the Do I have Java link :- This page tests to see if the JRE is working on your computer. This test applet, written with Java technology, displays information about your operating system, the JVM and the Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
If you can see the dancing Duke logo image animated in the applet above, then the JRE is functioning correctly. How about if I have a dancing Duke logo image flickering in a very amature-implementation way

Interestingly, I'm told I don't have Java (which of course I do) and given a rather nice install firefox plugin button. Clicking this downloads the JRE and promptly fails installation - suggesting I manually install Java.

About Demonpants providing a (failing) mirror... thanks, but I have 150GB/month to burn - I doubt it would be enough. I doubt your mirror could handle more. Bandwidth is not free eh?

Two thoughts..
1) I get that you're trying to appeal to consumers.. but the site doesn't explain or show what Java actually DOES or why you should download it. The previous layout showcased apps created with Java, not random applications OUTSIDE of the browser. Why would I download Java just because it "monitors key elements of Linc Volt" or it is used in Blu-ray? My computer is not a Blu-ray player..
2) The Dancing Duke applet does not exit cleanly. The Java console was just hanging out after I had closed my browser, forcing a task kill. This is yet another shining example of how applets are a giant heap of fail, and seemingly can't even be done right by Sun.

For some reason I thought Chris removed the images from our posts so I took it off my site. And I also reduced the quality of it, plus not many people use my site so I've got extra bandwidth.

The site looks pretty , but it looked fine before too. I assume their is more content to come about java and what it does, it feels very lacking, but i suppose that's what www.java.sun.com is for. I love the Java in Action page. It makes me feel like I'm three: look pretty pictures, wow, java is in that stuff it must be important. 2) The Dancing Duke applet does not exit cleanly. The Java console was just hanging out after I had closed my browser, forcing a task kill. Same for me, very disappointing.
