OpenWar is going to be a new open source 3D RTS (Real Time Strategy) Engine for the PC. Our goal is to create a strong, but flexible foundation that allows people to make their own RTS games with relative ease (through XML files and simple scripts). This means that many people of game-modding-skill-level will be able to build their own RTS.
We're also going to create a game on top of this engine. It will take place in a fantasy setting, for which our staff member Darvin has written quite a bit of storyline (it involves dwarves). Tell us everything that annoys you in current RTS games and we'll try to do it better.
At the moment we're working on a 2D top down RPG, to practice our skills and attract more people. This will be created as a standalone application using Java2D, seperated in three layers:
- a 2d game engine
- an rpg game engine (extending the 2d game engine)
- the game itself (xml files read by the rpg game engine)
