Is there a way to automatically close old topics? Lately ENC has been digging up topics that are 2 years old for no reason. I have seen 8 or 10 already. If a topic hasn't had a reply in 30 days then it should be automatically closed. If someone wants to post to it again, they can start a new topic and reference the old one, or ask a moderator to re-open it.

Well its a bit annoying the way the 'recent posts' gets all clogged up, but rules are over-kill. Besides, our friend ENC has raised some intersting topics, just maybe a few too many.

Old topics might as well be left open. Every once in a while someone will go through and post to some old topics for no reason, but is that really any worse than having someone start some new topics that no one replies to?

What's up with "CaptainJester" and "ENC" having the same picture ... I just realized you are not one and the same person! You confused me in the "javadoc" topic ...

no, you just spend more time looking at old threads posting this in a public forum is certainly not behind your back. also, the two avatars are the same because that is one of the default avatars on the forum (i.e. they don't need to spend any effort on it.. no uploading, no linking, just clicking)

Automatic closes suck. However, ENC's behaviour would have resulted in a ban elsewhere

can someone please explain the logic of why bringing old topics back to life is a bad thing ? Especially since he isn't spamming or anything... * darkprophet points at historians and tries to find logic for banning them from society...

bringing up an old topic and talking to the original postees as if they're still active is borderline stupid, after 3 years.. alot of posters are inactive
especially bringing up a 3 year old thread with a "me too" kind of post.

Fair enough. But let's not throw the baby out with the bath water. Closing old topics would cause a LOT more problems than just dealing with individuals who abuse them. GD.net closes threads, and it totally destroys any serious communication on a lot of explorative topics - for instance, it takes both academics and mainstream games devs literally a month or more to come back to a thread with new info, but on GD.net you are prevented from answering people's questions. Remember that gooogle still indexes all these old posts, so answering is hugely valuable, if not to the OP.

The point is that you dug up 8 posts that were over 2 years old and only have a relevent answer/question in maybe 2 of them. The rest were just "is that so". Just be more constructive or start a new topic so people don't waste time going into a topic with nothing new provided.

blah3: I seriously don't see anything wrong with closing a topic after 2 years. the SDN forums do it and just slap an "archive" sticker on it.
I wouldn't recommend an auto-close after only 30 days, though
