This forum is 1 of 2 forums that we try to stretch the contest across (the other at http://forum.java.sun.com/ ), though we get participation from a number of other forums as well. the contest is currently housed at http://javaunlimited.net/ - there you can play the past 2 years' worth of games. the games before that time have not yet been archived, and some have been lost for forever. the upcoming contest's home will be at http://javaunlimited.net/4K/ - its own webpage, breaking away from the Java Unlimited CMS.

Everyone is invited to participate. I announce it each year over at other forums. Well, most think its a bit too hardcore

JGO may be a significant participant, but we get entries from several forums. JGO stands out from the rest of the forums because it hosts the "official" 4K forum.

I wonder. Maybe the 4K competition should be in 2 categories; OpenGL (lwjgl) and regular Java.

You can't do anything good in 4K with all that boilerplate code of OpenGL.
The 16K competition was launched for that, but only Alan W had submitted a serious entry, IIRC.

i dont know what you mean? the 4K contest is organized at Java Unlimited, if you want to organise a similiar contest at your school or whatever, I'm certainly not going to stop you (I would have no way of knowing anyway)

But why not just get your friends to enter the main 4k comp? The more(*) the merrier.. (*) even though I probably won't be entering this year due to time. Dan.

Thanks... but I want to get the permission as my school may wish to get SUN to sponsor the event.. so you might be able to know it since is Sun related. But why not just get your friends to enter the main 4k comp? The more(*) the merrier.. I would love to but the other more pro developers around the world will steal all the medals, leaving my school participants abit demoralise to participate again.. is good to start at school level for my friends... and if they are up to it... global standards. Cheers!

Well, then there's certainly no need to worry. I admit there are some very skilled people participating in this contest, so the top 3 or 5 spots are obviously hard to reach, but I've managed to keep myself interested by ending up somewhere near the middle... and yet I'm far from a professional programmer. I'm only in it for the fun, and that seems to do the trick just fine!

it might be best to just invite your friends to join the 4K contest that starts this winter, but if you really want to, you can organize a local one by yourself. like I said - there's no way for us to know that you did anyway.
oh, and good luck with getting Sun to sponsor it. we've gone almost 5 years without recognition from Sun. ChrisM I think was trying to get some prizes for us, but I think that dream is over o_O

There was Rick's star-trek race game as well The lure of the 4K competition has brought me back out of the woodwork
