2-D RPG... @_@

Hi everyone. I am new to this board but I been reading alot of the topics here. Right now, I have to do a project on a 2-D (Top view) RPG game. My basic idea is putting the main game screen on the left and another menu screen on the right. Right now, I have no idea how to do a grid tile engine or using what layout to place my buttons on the right. If you guys have time to help me. I would greatly appriciate it. I've been searching for 3 hours now and I still havn't found anything that I understand. Theres also no tutorials that i found >_< Sorry and thanks.

this forum is filled with 2d tile questions like this, look it up
Don't know exactly where but I know someone make a small scroll 2d tile game that has only black boxes for obsticles, the point was to show how scrolling is simple...

If you arent following coke and code I need to ask:

(1) What kind of Java coding expereince do you have, if any?

(2) What dont you undersstand?

They are pretty basic....
