Just in case anyone missed it... 1.4.2 (non beta) is available since yesterday.

No, it does not

java version "1.4.2"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2-b28)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-b28, mixed mode)

You probably still have beta somewhere in path. Remove it and reinstall 1.4.2.

I think they have not done RCs, because beta was quite stable and only a few bugfixes had to be made beforel this final release.

Damn, I tried reinstalling it and everything and it's still saying beta at me. Where the hell is the little sod hiding?

Just to be sure - delete all directories which has 1.4.2 in them. You should have one in C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.4.2 and one in place you have installed java. Delete up to the point when you will get error with java -version. And the install - it should help.

You can also look into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft and play with setting there. Especially Java Runtime Environment\CurrentVersion and entry corresponding to it.

According to Javalobby, J2SE version 1.4.2_01 will be released with auto-update and Windows install from the web. You can test it at: http://java.sun.com/j2se/5.5.5/

Hopefully the fix for the DirectBuffer bug and the fix for the SSE floating point bug on the server VM will be in that too, if  not already in this 1.4.2 release (anyone know?).

If by DirectBuffer bug you mean Float/DoubleBuffer performance regression, then yes, it is fixed.
