Greets.

I was thinking it might be wise, since we have all these wonderful forums for graphics... to have a forum dedicated to the discussion of writing game servers.  There's an awful lot of knowledge between us I'm sure we could share (and since I'm more of a server guy than a client guy I would be more use around here)... what do you think?

[move]...taking away my hands from coding a gameserver.... [/move]

For now, I think, the 'Networking' or the 'OnLine Game Development' are not overloaded with traffic.
I think the latter for be appropriate for the topic?

We already have so many....

I'll tell you what we would like and that's for JGO to host our servers, for fun. (Not that I've got one). But it might be nice to host a guest client/server combo once a month.

That would be really great! Wouldn't need more than ftp, telnet and java. Sigh....

But on the old forums, there have been some discussions about sponsoring by sun. I don't believe these things are going to happen.  Embarrassed

Isn't that sad?

You would THINK Sun would sponsor companies to help its crusade.... but apparently not!

Grrrrr.

Servers are getting cheaper. You get dedicated HW with 50GB traffic for about 45EUR/month, you only have to live with practically no support.
Even cheaper for start is a virtual server for 10EUR (1GB disk space, 15GB traffic), no dedicated HW, but you can install any software you want, like tomcat to use java servlets and have some freedom in configuring linux.
Now these offers (www.server4free.de, all in german language) are possibly not usable if you want to make money with your server, as you would then need better support, backup service and uptime guarantee.
But to test a game server in the real world and find out customer acceptance it could be a nice low-cost solution. If it works you can always move your SW to another location.

I wouldn't wait for Sun offering any sponsoring. They would only support >98% finished SW and only very few of it, possibly you would have to sign too more papers than any time before and after a few weeks your SW would be shut down again.

Well it would be nice if Sun were to sponsor some good efforts.
Im making Java games for fun, but I have the added advantage of still going to college.
Im sure more posters are still in college and usualy they grant you server space for projects.

The hardware isnt great (PII 400) but its on high bandwidth Smiley

I might talk to my school if the game kicks off and get something aranged
